The Odes of Solomon are a most ancient pearl of christian poetry, as their text stems from the beginning of the second century AD. The text of these hymns is preserved first of all in Syriac, with fragments also in Coptic, Greek and Latin. Until now only a small number of the forty-two odes have been translated into Polish from these original languages. More translations have been executed from other modern languages, but never for the entire text. This paper introduces basic questions concerning the Odes of Solomon, presenting an up-to-date bibliography on the topic and offers a translation of five odes, never before translated from Syriac into Polish, with a brief textual commentary. This work announces a publication (inpreparation) of the whole collection of the Odes of Solomon in Polish.

The paper reviews Bulgarian definitions of allegory appearing in dictionaries and reference books. It reveals several paradoxes concerning the usage of the terms “alegoria” (алегория) and “inoskazanie” (иносказание) in contemporary Bulgarian language. Contrary to the lack of critical interest towards allegorical expression in 20th-century poetry, the author argues that several of Atanas Dalchev’s poems (most notably “Hospital” and “The House”) can be successfully interpreted allegorically.

The article’s aim is to present as well as life and characterize works by aChristian poet Bohuslav Reynek. It also discusses the perception of Reynek’s poetry and its translation into other languages, especially Polish. During the poet’s life the following volumes of poetry were published: Žízně, Sníh na zápraží, Mráz v okně, Podzimní motýli and Odlet vlaštovek. Apart from his own writing, he also translated from the French and German. Reynek together with his wife Susanne Renaud has gained in popularity recently, an association has even been launched whose mission is to retrieve the memory about both artists. Bohuslav Reynek’s works are among the most often interpreted in the Czech circles of music artists, beside e.g. Jan Skácel. The author of the article has been dealing with Reynekʼs oeuvre since 1992, when he published an article on banned and forgotten writers in the Region journal. Although Bohuslav Reynek passed away in 1971, we can posit that he is an immortal poet.

The theme of Dawn, which is present in the epics of Homer and later on in the poetry of Vergil and Ovid, was also present in ancient Christian poetry. This, on one side was due to ancient education, that included works by classical authors. On the other side, it resulted from the desire by Christian artists to mimic pagan masters. The theme of dawn is an example of acquasition of poetic patterns, but it also shows the original thought of Christian poets who gave it new meaning, identifying the Aurora with Christ.

This paper deals with the topos of locus amoenus in Latin poetry of Christian antiquity. Descriptions of idealized landscape can be found in whole literary tradition from Homer on. In Latin epic poetry Virgil used this device to describe Elysium, which Aeneas enters in the Aeneid. In Virgil’s eclogues locus amoenus is a place of refuge for shepherds from calamities of fate and an alien world. For the farmer in his Georgics it is a reward for honest agricultural work. For Horace it was an escape from the noise of the city. For Christian poets, Prudentius in Cathemerinon, Sedulius in Carmen paschale, Avitus of Vienne, Dracontius, Venantius Fortunatus and other, locus amoenus becomes the biblical paradise in the eschatological sense, or morę generally, salvation. Use of the topos of locus amoenus shows the cultural continuity of antiquity. In Christian poetry this theme is filled with a new content, but the process of thinking and artistic creation remains they share with classical authors.
