A memory about Professor Lidia Kuchtówna (1940–2023), a scholar of the Polish art of acting, directing, and stage design, who was affiliated with the Institute of Art, Polish Academy of Sciences, for fifty-eight years. The article discusses her most important works in theater history and editorial projects, devoted to Wilam Horzyca, Irena Solska, and Karol Frycz. It describes her approach as combining the biographical and aesthetic perspectives. It emphasizes the methodical and thorough quality and wide range of her library and archive research, which involved numerous research trips. The author also highlights Professor Kuchtówna’s interest in theater iconography.

Wspomnienie o prof. dr hab. Lidii Kuchtównie (1940–2023), badaczce polskiej sztuki aktorskiej, reżyserskiej i scenograficznej, która przez pięćdziesiąt osiem lat była związana naukowo z Instytutem Sztuki Polskiej Akademii Nauk. W artykule omówiono jej najważniejsze prace historycznoteatralne i edytorskie poświęcone Wilamowi Horzycy, Irenie Solskiej i Karolowi Fryczowi. Scharakteryzowano jej styl badawczy polegający na łączeniu perspektywy biograficznej z estetyczną. Podkreślono systematyczny i gruntowny charakter oraz szeroki zakres prowadzonych przez nią kwerend i badań źródłowych, związanych z licznymi podróżami naukowymi. Uwypuklono również jej zainteresowanie ikonografią teatralną.

This article is a reminiscence of Józef Marcin Szczublewski, an actor, journalist, editor, museum professional, and lecturer, but most of all, he was a theatre historian and biographer. Theatre scholars often call him “Szczubel”, and he used this nickname himself in his numerous, and often funny, notes. In 1952 he started collaborating with the Theatre Section of the State Institute of Art. He studied archival materials and conducted parallel press archives research with zeal. He published his findings in Pamiętnik Teatralny, and was the quarterly’s Secretary of the Editorial Board in 1962–1964. He soon became, along with Jerzy Got, a renowned biographer of Helena Modrzejewska. Warsaw theatres of the 19th and 20th centuries were a second area of his studies. The Institute of Art awarded Szczublewski his doctoral degree in 1971 based on his dissertation Żywot Osterwy (The Life of Osterwa, published in 1971), completed under the supervision of Prof. Zbigniew Raszewski. The biography had the form of a chronicle that put wide-ranging archival documentation into order. This was the form (and title) that became the author’s favourite. He soon came back to his favourite object of study and heroine to publish Żywot Modrzejewskiej (The Life of Modrzejewska, 1975), and after almost two decades followed it with Żywot Sienkiewicza (The Life of Sienkiewicz, 1989).

Tekst jest wspomnieniem o Józefie Marcinie Szczublewskim, aktorze, dziennikarzu, redaktorze, muzealniku i wykładowcy, ale przede wszystkim historyku teatru i biografie. Badacze teatru często nazywali go "Szczublem", a on sam używał tego przydomka w swoich licznych i często zabawnych zapiskach. W 1952 roku rozpoczął współpracę z Sekcją Teatralną Państwowego Instytutu Sztuki. Z zapałem studiował materiały archiwalne i prowadził równoległe badania archiwów prasowych. Wyniki badań publikował w "Pamiętniku Teatralnym", a w latach 1962–1964 był sekretarzem redakcji kwartalnika. Wkrótce stał się, wraz z Jerzym Gotem, znanym biografem Heleny Modrzejewskiej. Drugim obszarem jego badań były teatry warszawskie XIX i XX wieku. W 1971 roku Instytut Sztuki nadał Szczublewskiemu stopień doktora na podstawie rozprawy Żywot Osterwy, opublikowanej w 1971 roku pod kierunkiem profesora Zbigniewa Raszewskiego. Biografia miała formę kroniki porządkującej obszerną dokumentację archiwalną. Tę właśnie formę i tytuł autor wykorzystywał najchętniej. Do ulubionego przedmiotu badań i bohaterki powrócił wkrótce, publikując Żywot Modrzejewskiej (1975), a po niemal dwóch dekadach – Żywot Sienkiewicza (1989).

Memory of Henryk Zdzisław Jurkowski (1927–2016), a puppet theatre historian, theorist and critic, pedagogue, dramatist, editor, and long-time Polish representative in UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette), officer of the Union’s governing bodies (i.e. member of the Presidium, later renamed as Executive Committee, 1959–1992; Secretary General, 1972–1980; Vice-President, 1980–1984; President, 1984–1992), the President of POLUNIMA (2007–2011). He authored hundreds of articles, essays, reviews and dozens of books published in more than dozen languages regarding the history and theory of puppet theatre and puppetry esthetic, including his three-volume Dzieje teatru lalek (‘A History of Puppet Theatre,’ PIW: Warszawa, 1970, 1976, 1984; revised 2nd edition in two volumes-Lublin, 2012), Aspects of Puppet Theatre. A collection of essays (Puppet Centre Trust: London, 1988), Ecrivains et marionnettes. Quatre siècles de la literature dramatique en Europe (Editions Institut Internationale de la Marionnette: Charleville-Mézières, 1991), the two-volume History of European Puppetry (The Edwin Mellen Press: Lewiston, NY, 1996 & 1998) and Metamorphoses. La marionette au XXe siècle (Institut Internationale de la Marionnette: Charleville-Mézières, 2000).

Wspomnienie o Henryku Jurkowskim (1927–2016), historyku, teoretyku i krytyku teatru lalek. Jurkowski był także pedagogiem, dramaturgiem i redaktorem. Przez wiele lat reprezentował Polskę w UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette) i był członkiem jej władz (m.in. członkiem Prezydium, później Komitetu Wykonawczego, 1959–1992; sekretarzem generalnym, 1972–1980; wiceprzewodniczącym, 1980–1984; przewodniczącym, 1984–1992). Był także prezesem POLUNIMA (2007–2011). Opublikował setki artykułów, esejów, recenzji i kilkadziesiąt książek w kilkunastu językach na temat historii i teorii teatru lalek oraz estetyki lalkarskiej. W Polsce wznawiano jego trzytomowe Dzieje teatru lalek (PIW: Warszawa, 1970, 1976, 1984; wydanie II poprawione w dwóch tomach - Lublin, 2012). Za granicą ukazały się m.in.: Aspects of Puppet Theatre. A memoir devoted to Jerzy Got (1923–2004), theater historian, documentalist, and editor, initiator of the first program of academic theater studies at Jagiellonian University. The author presents the turns of Got's professional life: his work at the Department of Theater History and Theory of the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1956–1967), the organization of the theater department of the Historical Museum of Krakow (1961–1966), his work at Jagiellonian University (1967–1978), and the fruitful period of his independent research after moving to Vienna in 1978. He emphasizes Got's merits for profiling and developing theatrical research at the Jagiellonian University and opening it to international cooperation. He emphasizes the versatility of the scholar-combining a love of documentary and archival research with analytical skills and interpretive talent. He points out the most important areas of Got's interest: the history of the theater of Cracow, the history of the theater of Lviv, theatrical biography (Antonina Hoffmann, Helena Modrzejewska, Bogumił Dawison, Ludwik Solski), as well as the culture of ancient Greece. He also mentions his passion for photography, which was closely related to theater research.
