The article describes the figures of nuns in the prose of Eliza Orzeszkowa and Bolesław Prus, their way of perceiving the world and their role in it, as well as their understanding of God. Orzeszkowa and Prus create completely different images of representatives of the consecrated life. The vision of the strict God of sister Mechtylda is completely different from the image of the merciful Creator of mother Apolonia, whereas the nuns depicted by Prus are simply too busy to express their understanding of God. The accession of the heroines to the monastery is also motivated differently: some of them seek refuge from the here and now, others look for independence or want to help other people.
