The dominant pattern in the Western hermeneutics has been to view autobiography as an occasion for the celebration of the individual. This article tackles the dialectics between identity and entity, between self and other, and between genius and “everybody” in two of Gertrude Stein’s autobiographies: The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and Everybody’s Autobiography. Drawing on associations between autobiography and photography, I highlight the performativity of Stein’s autobiographical self, suggest posing as a metaphor for the autobiographical act, and discuss Gertrude Stein’s move from the question of identity to the question of genius as entity

An artistic portrait is a gate to immortality. It builds an image and serves as the calling card of the model. All over the world, lawyers have always commissioned their portraits, nothing has changed in that for generations. In this paper, an attempt is made at answering questions of how, for whom and for how much to pose for a portrait and of how to revive the old Polish tradition of commissioning portraits.

The trial of Oscar Wilde, which was widely commented on in the Czech decadent magazine “Moderní revue”, not only revealed the range of the social condemnation of homosexuality, but also opened a discussion about distinctive features of the homosexual identity. The poetry and prose of Jiří Karásek from Lvovice, in the common opinion representing first of all the decadent world outlook, may be regarded as an attempt to bring closer these determinants of the homoerotic way of love and life to the reader. To accomplish this task the writer needed to find out the appropriate literary medium. Karásek rediscovered it in devices of symbolic and decadent poetics, which enable to replace the literal senses of representation by means of semantic undecidability. This solution allowed him to suggest the personal sincerity of the literaryexpression and to avoid allegations of affectations and decadent pose.
