The matters related to defendant’s guarantees are regulated both by the Polish legal system and by international law. Defendant’s guarantees constitute a very significant issue in view of the fact that defendants are the subject of the criminal proceedings and that in such proceedings, in principle, they are on their own while facing prosecutors with a strong law enforcement system at their disposal. Therefore, it is essential that defendants are notified of their rights and that their rights are ensured and respected. The situation seems to be slightly more complicated in international criminal proceed¬ings.
