The article is presenting cultural events which took place in Łódź in years 2004-2011. They were divided in regard to the time of organization and subject matter. Authors made also attempt to determine the significance of cultural events in the city`s life – their role in development of the tourism and promotion of Łódź and changingin the interior space of the city. The summary of the article is the BCG matrix, which was constructed on the base of two factors: possibilities of development of the event and its meaning in the promotion of the city.

In the early 19th century Łódź became a huge centre of textile production. However, the transformations in Poland after 1989 led to the decline of this industry. At present the city is looking for new forms of development, such as services, including tourism and culture. One of the most important elements of the cultural function in Łódź are film festivals, based on over 50 year long tradition of film making in this city. The aim of this article is to present the film festivals organized in Łódź, which are a tourist asset and a kind of tourist product (an event). They are at the same time an element of cultural tourism, part of which is event tourism, connected with festivals and film tourism.

W artykule poruszono kwestie kulturowych wymiarów zróżnicowań poprzemysłowych miast. Zaprezentowano teoretyczne i metodologiczne założenia „teorii scen” zaproponowanej przez tzw. „nową szkołę chicagowską” w socjologii miasta. Wykorzystując założenia tej teorii, autorka analizuje dane na temat charakteru kulturowego polskich gmin miejskich, próbuje określić ich kulturowy profil oraz przedstawia sceny kulturowe Warszawy. Autorka konkluduje, że dane zebrane w polskich miastach nie odzwierciedlają jeszcze zachodnich wzorów poprzemysłowej dynamiki kulturowej.

The paper covers problems of cultural dimensions of post-industrial cities. It presents theoretical as well as methodological assumptions of theory of scenes, which has been formulated by so called “New Chicago School” in urban sociology. Applying this theory, the author provides some data on cultural character of Polish urban communes and examines their cultural profile, as well as describes cultural scenes of Warsaw. She concludes that Polish cities do not reflect “Western” patterns of post-industrial cultural dynamics.

Artykuł stanowi swego rodzaju próbę analizy społeczno-przestrzennego zagospodarowania części centrum Łodzi jako kluczowego fragmentu miasta z perspektywy jego rozwoju historycznego, społecznego i urbanistycznego. Na wstępie została przedstawiona geneza i kolejne etapy powstania miasta wraz z jego śródmieściem. Następnie dokonano przeglądu aktualnej sytuacji problemowej na podstawie zgromadzonego materiału wizualnego w odniesieniu do pięciu podstawowych form ładu przestrzennego. W dalszej kolejności przeprowadzono opis planu rewitalizacji dotyczącego tzw. Nowego Centrum Łodzi jako oficjalnego planu odnowy społeczno-przestrzennej tej części miasta. W zakończeniu podsumowano powyższe rozważania, poddając subiektywnej ocenie diagnozę stanu obecnego oraz skuteczność planu naprawczego wobec centrum Łodzi.

The article seeks to analyse the socio-spatial organisation of the centre of Lodz as a key part of the city from the perspective of its historical, social and urban development. First, the process of urban spatial formation of the city and its centre is presented, including all subsequent stages. The introduction to the problem is followed by the review of the current situation in Lodz based on visual material gathered, with reference to the five basic forms of spatial order. Further parts of the article contain a description of a specific plan aimed at revitalisation of the so-called “New Centre of Lodz” as a formal recipe for socio-spatial renewal of this part of the city. Finally, conclusions are proposed/, based on subjective assessment of the current state of the city centre and prospective effectiveness of the recovery plan for it.

The main goal of the article is to analyze the level of psychosocial ties of inhabitants with the selected postindustrial cities, types of these ties and potential factors affecting the level of attachment. The analysis will be focused on ties of inhabitants of Panevezys (Lithuania), Lodz (Poland) and Ivanovo (Russia) – the cities that used to play an important role of industrial centres. The empirical basis for the analyses is research conducted within Resurgence of peripheral postindustrial cities research project, funded by The Polish National Science Centre. The research was conducted on a representative sample of inhabitants of Panevezys, Lodz and Ivanovo.

The article shows the author’s concept of urban tourism hypertrophy as well as the genesis of this phenomenon in the context of transformation of the modern city. Based on literature, the logic of rooting and using tourism in the transformation of the urban economy and the transformation of the urban space, as well as the roles assigned to tourism in urban policy has been clarified. Also, the processes and phenomena accompanying the current stage of tourismification of the city, in various geographical contexts, have been discussed. In particular, the growing importance of tourism-related housing financialization was highlighted.

W artykule zaprezentowano autorskie ujęcie hipertrofii turystyki miejskiej, jak i genezę tego zjawiska w kontekście przemian współczesnego miasta. Przedstawiono, na podstawie literatury, logikę włączania i wykorzystywania turystyki w transformacji miejskiej gospodarki i przestrzeni oraz przypisane jej role w polityce miejskiej. Pokazano ponadto w różnych kontekstach geograficznych procesy i zjawiska towarzyszące współczesnej turystyfikacji miasta, w tym zyskującą na znaczeniu finansjalizację zasobów mieszkaniowych.
