The article offers a broad overview of Nam-June Paik’s ideas of the expansion of video arts interpreted in the light of Zen Buddhism. His works recognized as the most significant examples of his marriage between the art theory and practice are marked by a thought-provoking vision of participatory culture, communicated in-between the networks in the post-industrial society. Our purpose is to reexamine his attitude to TV culture in the oscillation between Western and Eastern gaze considered in connection to the problems of emptiness and meditation drawn from Zen religious beliefs. In discussing his installations there is special stress to reconstruct his inner-insight into the subject of seeing and watching inscribed in a closed-circuit of the communication network.

Teoria społeczeństwa ryzyka łączy upadek społeczeństwa przemysłowego z pojawieniem się zagrożeń pozazmysłowych i zmianą priorytetów politycznych. Unikanie zagrożeń stało się znaczącym problemem życia politycznego. W myśl teorii społeczeństwa ryzyka upadkowi społeczeństwa przemysłowego towarzyszy wzrost napięć psychicznych. W efekcie przeprowadzonych analiz okazało się, że w społeczeństwie ryzyka odnotowano znacznie mniej zaburzeń psychicznych niż wynikałoby to ze statystyk medycznych. Wraz z zanikiem społeczeństw przemysłowych współczynniki samobójstw wykazywały trend spadkowy. Społeczeństwo ryzyka jest produktem zmian gospodarczych i kulturalnych, i przejawia się w nowej orientacji opinii publicznej i poprzez wzrost popytu na bezpieczeństwo.

The theory of risk society connects the fall of industrial society with grows of non sensual threatens and changes of political priorities. The different kinds of risks and avoidance of them became new topics of political life. Some of the prominent theorists of the theory of risk society have claimed that the fall of industrialsociety is accompanied by an increase in mental tensions, because of growth of threatens. In order to verify these theses the model of risk society was constructed. It turned out that there are probably much fewer mental disorders than evidenced by medical statistics. Asthe industrial societies have vanished, the coefficients of suicides showed a declining trend. The risk society is the product of economic and cultural changes and manifests itself in new orientation of public opinion and growth of demand for safety.

W artykule podkreślono współczesne tendencje zmiany społecznej w globalnym kontekście i jej główne czynniki – wiedzę, informację i technologię. Rozwój technologii informacyjnych i komunikacyjnych przez ostatnie 50 lat znacząco zainspirował myślicieli społecznych do dokładnego przeanalizowania roli zaznaczonych zjawisk. Ich refleksje i wnioski zaowocowały nie tylko różnorodnymi teoriami zmian społecznych. Tacy myśliciele, jak Daniel Bell czy Manuel Castells, zostali wybrani do tego artykułu częściowo dlatego, że zaproponowali specyficzne nazwy dla danego etapu rozwoju: społeczeństwo postindustrialne oparte na zmianach w użytkowaniu wiedzy i informacji w usługach w ujęciu Bella oraz Castellsa społeczeństwo sieciowe oparte na produkcji informacji i roli technologii sieciowych w społeczeństwach globalizowanych w krajach rozwiniętych i rozwijających się na całym świecie. Te koncepcje zostały porównane z kilkoma innymi definicjami oraz teoriami informacji i wiedzy również w związku z rozwojem technologii komunikacyjnych.

In the paper the main accent is put on the contemporary social change in the global context and its main factors that are knowledge, information and technology. The development of communication and information technologies during the last fifty years significantly inspired social thinkers to analyse thoroughly the role of the mentioned phenomena. Their reflections and conclusions resulted not only in various sociological and economic theories of social change. Such thinkers as Daniel Bell and Manuel Castells were selected for the paper partly because they coined the name for the current stage of social development, that is post-industrial society based on the changes in knowledge and information use in services in the Bell’s concept and Castells’s network society based on information production and network technologies roles in the globalized societies in the developed and developing countries all over the world. These concepts were compared with several other definitions and theories of information and knowledge in connection with communication technology development.
