The labour share of income as a percentage of GDP is an important indicator for the public finances, because the social insurance contributions are deducted directly from salaries. However, since the mid-70s of the XX century the decrease in almost all developed countries are visible. This article presents the main theories explaining the declining labour share of income, along with an attempt to assess whether the dominant trend is deterministic or dependent on the specific institutional decisions. This question is particularly relevant in the context of the public finances’ reforms, leading to a transition in the redistribution of wages in the life cycle.

Udział wynagrodzeń w PKB jest ważnym wskaźnikiem dla finansów publicznych, ponieważ to właśnie od pensji odprowadzone są składki na ubezpieczenia społeczne. Niemniej od połowy lat 70. ubiegłego stulecia obserwujemy jego spadek w niemal wszystkich państwach rozwiniętych. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia główne teorie tłumaczące malejący udział wynagrodzeń w PKB wraz z próbą oceny czy dominujący trend jest deterministyczny, czy też zależny od konkretnych decyzji instytucjonalnych. Pytanie to jest szczególnie istotne w kontekście reform finansów publicznych, prowadzących do zmiany sposobu redystrybucji wynagrodzeń w cyklu trwania życia.
