W odwołaniu do teorii piętna, sformułowanej przez Ervinga Goffmana, autorzy sprawdzili hipotezę dotyczącą funkcjonowania w relacjach interpersonalnych w przypadku chorych z piętnem syfi lisu. Badania miały charakter porównawczy (grupę kontrolną stanowiły osoby zdrowe) i pozwoliły na stwierdzenie zmian w zakresie: (1) ograniczenia kontaktów społecznych; (2) ich niższej oceny; (3) spadku pozycji w znaczących grupach społecznych; (4) zróżnicowania typów relacji z innymi.

Referring to the theory of stigma formulated by Erving Goffman, the article verifies the hypothesis concerning ways people affected by the stigma of syphilis function in their interpersonal relations. The research is a comparative one (healthy people constitute the control group). The following changes were found: (1) reduction of social relations; (2) decrease of self-esteem; (3) decrease of social status (in significant social groups); (4) differentiation of types of relations with other people.
