The article relates to the evolution of pragmatism assumptions in the context of John Dewey’s education concept, in the premises of which the author notices numerous contradictions. One of the main assumptions of John Dewey’s education concept expressed in a question what to do does not meet the requirements of practical and pragmatical knowledge. It is merely useful knowledge. The influence of pragmatism, as an education concept, on social life and its development depends on results of deontolog-ical nature. Due to adopted criteria assessing the influence of pragmatism on social life and its development, it is not possible to evaluate the influence that pragmatism exerts on social life and its development due to the lack of coherence. Nevertheless, it does not disqualify Dewey’s pragmatism as an idea.
