The primary purpose of the paper is to prove that prisoners of war have an inalienable right to the respect of their dignity. It is discussed that human dignity is one of the crucial normative categories under international human right law and international humanitarian law of armed conflict. The article presents the results of the analysis of selected provisions of the III Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War, relating to the conditions of detention, accommodation and security. The Author also makes an attempt to identify the rules governing the way in which image of prisoners of war may be disseminated. Finally, the paper contributed to determine the obligations (positive and negative) of the detaining state in terms of guaranteeing the dignity of prisoners of war.

Podstawowym celem artykułu jest wykazanie, iż jeńcy wojenni mają niezbywalne prawo do poszanowania swojej godności. Teza ta opierała się na założeniu, że godność człowieka jest jedną z centralnych kategorii normatywnych zarówno w prawie międzynarodowym praw człowieka, jak i w międzynarodowym prawie humanitarnym konfliktów zbrojnych. W artykule przedstawione zostaną wyniki analizy wybranych postanowień III Konwencji genewskiej o traktowaniu jeńców wojennych, dotyczących warunków zatrzymania, zakwaterowania oraz bezpieczeństwa. Podjęta zostanie również próba wskazania reguł związanych z upublicznianiem wizerunku jeńców wojennych przez organy państwowe oraz przez media. W ten sposób przedstawione zostaną obowiązki państwa zatrzymującego (pozytywne oraz negatywne) w zakresie gwarancji poszanowania godności jeńców wojennych.
