The main aim of the paper is to present the results of research concerning psychological and socio-cultural risk factors for development of negative anti-health (that is too restrictive and compensatory) attitude toward one’s body in young Polish women. The study comprised 120 women, of 20 to 25 years of age, with similar socio-demographic status (marital status, living and having been brought up in multi-generation families) who so far in the course of their lives have not disclosed mental or somatic disturbances (having accompanying manifestations of body image distortion). The theoretical theses for the research model were the contemporary cognitive concepts (multifactor models of body image dissatisfaction), as well as socio-cultural concepts. The following have been used in the study: thematic drawings (body images), the Contour Drawing Rating Scale (CDRS) developed by - developed by Thompson & Gray, the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) created by D. Garner (Polish version developed by C. Żechowski), The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire 3 (SATAQ 3), and questionnaire for behaviour towards the body (KZWC - Kwestionariusz Zachowań Wobec Ciała) (author’s own tool). The results confirmed the existence of negative attitude toward one’s own body, as well as development of inclinations for compensation-generating behaviour (application of various cleansing means and methods to change body weight and body image, which are disadvantageous for health). A group of risk factors has been identified, which may lead to the development of the above attitudes and behaviours toward one’s body in healthy women, who at the same time do not accept the image of their real bodies.

The purpose of the investigation was to establish the relationship between beliefs about pain control and pain coping strategies and predictors of pain coping strategies. 103 patients with rheumatoid arthritis participated in the study – 59 were women, 43 men. The mean of age was 38.1. Beliefs about Pain Control (BPCQ) prepared by Skevington and Pain Coping Strategies Questionnaire developed by Rosenstiel and Keefe were used in the study. The results indicated on the differentiation in choice of pain coping strategies dependently from beliefs about pain control and revealed predictors for two pain coping strategies. Predictor of diverting attention appeared internal control and predictors of catastrophizing appeared all three kinds of pain control.

Introduction and aim. The prevalence of hypertension is increasing with accompanying poor control. The aim of this study was to assess the predictors of knowledge and practices of adult hypertensives. Material and method. The study was a prospective (before and after) study with health education as the intervention. A simple random sampling technique with computer-generated random numbers was used to recruit 386 patients. Data were analysed using SPSS version 23. Logistic regressions were used to determine the predictors of knowledge and practices. Results. Those who had tertiary education were about four times more likely to have good knowledge of hypertension than those who had secondary education (OR=0.256; 95% CI=0.106–0.617). The females were about 1.73 times more likely to have good practices of hypertension than males (OR=1.729; 95% CI=1.008–2.966). For every 1 unit increase in the body mass index, there was a statistically significant increase in diastolic blood pressure by about 0.22 units (95% CI=0.046–0.394, p=0.013). The health education had a positive impact on the blood pressure reduction. Conclusion. The predictors of knowledge of hypertension, practices of hypertensives and diastolic blood pressure were level of education, sex, and body mass index respectively.

This paper contributes to the literature by showing that discrepancies in leisure time physical activity between transition and non-transition countries are mainly due to lower activity by persons, who are in relationship, are older, reside in rural areas and/or have a lower income. Unlike existing studies our results of logit models show that, controlling for all other variables, females are equally likely (in transition economies) or more likely (in non-transition economies) to be regularly active in their leisure time than males. We believe that the reason for differences in results is omitted variable bias, since papers that find women to be less active do not control for person’s income.

Objectives: In addition to being a serious health-hazard, substance-use-and-misuse (SUM) in military forces negatively infl uences physical fi tness and army readiness. The aim of this study was to defi ne the prevalence of SUM, which includes cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and multiple SUM (i.e. practice of daily smoking and harmful alcohol drinking), and factors infl uencing SUM in the Croatian Special Army Forces (SAF). Materials and Methods: We studied 73 SAF members. A self-administered validated questionnaire was used to gather socio-demographic and military-professionrelated data, and SUM factors. The associations between studied variables were established by the Chi² test, and forward conditional logistic regression (FCLR). Results: With less than 40% of daily smokers, smoking was within expected values. Almost 80% of the examinees reported no binge drinking, while 54% reported harmful drinking according to the Alcohol Use Disorders Identifi cation Test scale. Paternity and education level were negatively associated with daily smoking, while higher incidence of daily smoking was found for privates and those who practiced harmful drinking (all at p < 0.05). The FCLR demonstrated a higher risk of harmful alcohol consumption for younger commissioned offi cers (OR for military rank = 5.54, 95% CI: 2.19-13.99; OR for age = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.76-0.95). Conclusion: Although SUM incidence was not alarming compared to the overall population and the previously reported military data, additional efforts are necessary in order to decrease cigarette consumption. The study showed that protective/risk structure of the substance misuse in the military should be investigated specifi cally with regard to particular military services, corps, and socio-cultural environment.

BackgroundReaching an appropriate physical activity level (PAL) in adolescence is an important public health problem. This study aimed to evaluate factors associated with PAL and changes in PAL in late adolescence.Material and MethodsThe sample involved 411 adolescents (201 girls) who were 16 years of age at study baseline; the participants completed a structured validated questionnaire at baseline (the beginning of the third grade of high school) and again at follow-up (the end of the fourth grade; when they were 18 years of age). Variables were obtained at both testing waves and included the following predictors: sociodemographic indices (sex, socioeconomic status, parental education), sports factors (participation in individual and team sports, competitive sports achievement, experience in sports), and PAL (the primary outcome), which was measured using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents.ResultsA significant decrease in PAL between baseline and follow-up testing was evidenced (t-test = 6.17, p < 0.001). A logistic regression model calculated with a dichotomized outcome (normal PAL vs. low PAL), and sex as a covariate, showed a significant influence of participation in team sports and maternal education on PAL, both at baseline (OR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.11–1.87; OR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.02–1.90) and at follow-up (OR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.01–1.90; OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.08–1.70, for team sports and maternal education, respectively).ConclusionsThe study confirmed certain associations between the studied variables and PAL, but there was no significant influence of the observed indicators on changes in PAL in late adolescence. Further studies evaluating other predictors of changes in PAL are warranted. Med Pr. 2020;71(6):637–47

Neurodevelopmental disorders are changes in the development caused by internal and external factors, they manifest from the prenatal period or become visible in the early child development. The early age (0-3 years) is crucial for the detection and identification of diversion in psychomotor development, as well as for the initiation of intervention strategies. The paper provides insight into the current understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders (according to DSM-5 and MKCH 11) at an early age; explains their more detailed context, the possibilities of recognition predictors and precursors in paediatric practice, and the related need for professional care. It underlines the importance and real possibilities of interdisciplinary cooperation of paediatricians and psychologists to support the maximization of psychomotor development, built on the research-verified common neurodevelopmental basis of particular developmental domains.

Objectives This study has aimed at identifying prevalence of injury-occurrence in 24 pre-professional-ballet-dancers (females, 16–18 years of age), and identifying the associations between the body-built and prevalence of injuries. Material and Methods The sample of variables included: body mass, body height, and 3 somatotype characteristics (mesomorph, ectomorph and endomorph) and data on injuries over the preceding year. Results Dancers were mostly ectomorphic-mesomorph (endomorphy: 2.6±0.54, mesomorphy: 3.99±0.77, ectomorphy: 3.23±0.54). The most commonly injured locations were the foot (17% of all injuries) and ankle (17%). Majority of the injuries occurred while practising but 37% of hip-injuries occurred while performing. Ankle-injuries resulted in longest absence from ballet. Endomorphy was related to ankle-injury (odds ratio (OR) = 1.9, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.4–2.3), ectomorphy to foot injury (OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.1–2.9), and body-mass to injury to the toes (OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.4–3.1). Conclusions The results of this study allow for recognizing those dancers who are particularly vulnerable to injuries of certain body location. A more profound analysis of the possible mechanisms that lead to hip-injury during performance is needed. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(1):151–159

Background: Most demographic, clinical and MRI variables in patients with relapsing – remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) failed to predict the IFN beta treatment outcome. Objective: To identify pre-treatment and early treatment variables which predict in RRMS patients a beneficial response to the INF beta therapy. Method and patients: A survey of 20 articles on pretreatment and early treatment variables predicting the result of the IFN beta therapy in MS patients. Results: Age, gender, duration of the disease, the total or annual number of relapses and disability scale status prior to the treatment did not prognosticate the response to the IFN beta treatment. In the pre-treatment period responders compared with non-responders underwent the RR course more often. The earlier initiation of the IFN beta treatment showed a positive predictive value but only in selected patients. During the first 2 years of treatment the absence of relapses, decreased disability scale status, neuroimages with 0-2 new T2 – related lesions, without active T1-related enhanced lesions and with lower T2-, T1- related lesions predicted beneficial effects after further 2-3 years of treatment. Conclusion: A composite of selected predictors increases the chance of the beneficial IFN beta treatment outcome. The composite consists of the reduced number of relapses, the diminished disability scale status, the limited volume of new or extending T2-, T1- related lesions and the decreased number of active enhanced lesions during the first 2 years of treatment.

Temat. Większość demograficznych, klinicznych i neuroobrazowych (RM) predyktorów nie określa odpowiedzi chorych z nawracająco-zwalniającym stwardnieniem rozsianym (NZSR) na leczenie interferonem beta (IFN beta). Cel. Metoda i pacjenci.

Materiał i metody Badaniami objęto 1002 osoby w wieku 17–18 lat (366 chłopców, 636 dziewcząt) z 12. klasy. Model regresji wykazał, że częstsza nieobecność w szkole (iloraz szans (odds ratio – OR): 1,544; 95% przedział ufności (confidence interval – CI): 1,063–2,243), więcej nieusprawiedliwionych nieobecności w szkole (OR: 1,360; 95% CI: 1,029–1,796) i nadmierne zainteresowanie rodziców (OR: 1,530; 95% CI: 1,020–2,295) były istotnymi predyktorami palenia wśród chłopców. Wśród dziewcząt wyższe ryzyko palenia wynikało z gorszych postępów w nauce (OR: 1,467; 95% CI: 1,089–1,977), częstszej nieobecności w szkole (OR: 1,565; 95% CI: 1,137–2,155), częstszych konfliktów z rodzicami (OR: 1,979; 95% CI: 1,405–2,789) i poczucia zbyt małej opieki rodzicielskiej (OR: 0,602; 95% CI: 0,377–0,962). Med. Introduction Though adolescence is recognised as a critical period for smoking prevention, there is a lack of research focused on this issue in Kosovo. The aim of this study has been to examine the gender-specific factors of influence (predictors) for smoking among adolescents in Pristina, Kosovo. Material and Methods The study sample comprised 1002 adolescents at the age of 17–18 (366 boys, 636 girls), all of whom were in the school’s 12th grade. The predictors included sociodemographic variables, familial (i.e., parental) monitoring, parents’ educational background, and sport-related factors. The Chi² and forward stepwise logistic regression analyses with a dichotomous criterion (smoking vs. non-smoking) were applied. Results The incidence of smoking was high (31% and 40% smokers, including 7% and 12% daily smokers for girls and boys, respectively). The regression model revealed more frequent absence from school (odds ratio (OR): 1.544; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.063–2.243), more unexcused school absences (OR: 1.360; 95% CI: 1.029–1.796), and frequent parental questioning (OR: 1.530; 95% CI: 1.020–2.295) to be significant predictors of smoking among boys. For girls, a higher risk of smoking was associated with lower scholastic achievement (OR: 1.467; 95% CI: 1.089–1.977), more frequent absence from school (OR: 1.565; 95% CI: 1.137–2.155), increased conflict with parents (OR: 1.979; 95% CI: 1.405–2.789), and a self-declared perception of less parental care (OR: 0.602; 95% CI: 0.377–0.962). Sports were not found to be strongly related to smoking. However, a high risk of daily smoking was found among boys who participated in team sports and subsequently quit. Conclusions This study reinforces the need for gender- and culture-specific approaches to studying the factors that influence smoking among adolescents. Med Pr 2015;66(2):153–163

Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) affects 80% of patients in the acute phase of stroke. The most frequently mentioned predictors of dysphagia in this group of patients are: age, presence of dysarthria, high score in the NIHSS scale with a cut-off point depending on the location of supra- or infratentorial brain damage, volume of the stroke lesion. OD is a symptom of cortical and subcortical lesions, as well as those located in the pons and medulla. The article discusses the results of last year’s studies on the correlation of the location of the stroke lesion with the presence and specific symptoms of OD. There were also described clinical cases of patients in the acute phase of stroke from our own speech therapy practice in the stroke department, confirming the reports from the world literature.
