Dialectology – apart from its typical research tasks – is thus responsiblefor preserving the valuable heritage; disseminating knowledge on dialects; depicting the relations between dialects, history, and folk culture; raising the general public’s awareness of the position occupied by dialects among the varieties of Polish. Most importantly, in view of standard Polish being the prevailing variety, dialects need to be shown as embedded in family, social, local, and regional perspectives.Preserving the endangered dialects, as well as the whole intangible cultural heritage, is a multifaceted undertaking that comprises in the first place documentation, description, and scientific interpretation of dialectal material.
