The novelisation of the Constitution of the Polish People’s Republic of 7 April 1989 granted the President the role of a preserver of observing international military alliances, which is commonly linked in doctrine with Poland’s membership in the Warsaw Pact. The first part of the article presents the origin of the discussed novelisation of the Constitution of the Polish People’s Republic and motives of reinstating the office of the President to the Polish constitutional order. The second part of the article contains characteristics of formal and actual aspects of the Warsaw Pact. The third part presents the geopolitical situation of Poland in the second half of the eighties in the 20th century, with a particular emphasis put on dangers related thereto. The next part covers the analysis of the President’s competencies which enable him to perform the title role. The fifth part describes the road of Wojciech Jaruzelski to the presidency and characterizes the way of pursuing Poland’s international policy after the victory of the Solidarity camp in the June election. The last, sixth part indicates the reasons the legislator was guided by entrusting the President with the title role.
