SPP XXII 95 (early 3rd century ad) is concerned with the leading priests of the sanctuary of Soknopaios, who were arrested on account of the suspicious death of a clothes vendor. Their interrogations, however, brought no result, and now efforts are being made to have them released. In the present papyrus, the head of the office summarises the state of affairs in order to append it as a ‘cover-letter’ to the petition submitted to the strategos.

After the end of the Second World War, a rather long Soviet occupation began in Lithuania. This was a difficult period of trials for the entire Lithuanian society, and especially for the Catholic Church. Any possibility of permanent training of clergy was then forbidden. In this way, Catholic priests in Lithuania learned to act underground. The need for spiritual and intellectual improvement was not just an individual affair. During the long years of Soviet occupation, certain schools were formed to provide assistance to the priests of the persecuted Church. Such schools became secretly operating monasteries. Lithuanian priests drew courage from the personality of Pope John Paul II, as well as new ideas from underground publications and books imported from abroad, especially from Poland. Soviet atheist propaganda, which persecuted priests and wanted to turn them into people without higher education and present them as such in society, did not achieve its goals.

In ancient Egypt sacred animals were served by specific categories of priests who fulfilled various functions and tasks. The aim of this article is to examine the evidence that concerns the activities of these priests within sacred animal cults in the Ptolemaic Fayum. This study identifies, analyses, and classifies the occupational titles of the priests and attempts to discover the full range of their duties, concentrating on their non-religious activities. This in turn will enable the role that they played in both local society and the economy to be explored.

Priests-Prefects’Association operated in Poland in the years 1919–1939. Their members were priests who were teaching religious education and did the pastoral work in the school environment. Articles presented in Catechetical and Educational Monthly Magazine show the work of priests in the Association. The aim of the activity of the Association was to introduce the idea of the catholic upbringing and to exchange experiences. The Lviv Circle of Priests-Prefects was one of the biggest in the country and the work of the priests was a guiding light for the others. The priests met on weekly meetings where they read their papers out. The main issue of them was their pastoral work at school. In the Circle there were three sections. Their members in detail discussed issues concerning state primary and secondary schools and Marian Sodalities.

Active involvement of army veterans in local governance and religious life of provincial towns and villages of the Roman Empire is generally determined as the ratio of number of retired soldiers who were magistrates and priests to the total number of veterans, known from all the inscriptions found on the territory of a province. In the opinion of the author, this approach may lead to a misperception of this aspect of the former soldiers’ life and consequently needs to be revised. This paper presents an alternative method of resolving the problem and outlines perspectives for its practical application on the example of material relating to the province of Lower Moesia.

The scale of suicide phenomenon leads to constantly asked questions about efficiency of prevention steps that supposed to save endangered human life. Religion, or more accurately religious involvement protects people from committing suicide. It seems that this efficiency could be even higher if Catholic priests and the strongly involved in parish life laity were involved in this activity. The research of Catholic priests in Poland that studied their ideas of partucipating in rescuing of would–be suicide does not show optimistic results. Lack of interest in the problem of suicides threatens with a sin of abandonment, in this case abandonment of a would-be suicide who needs help. The goal of this article is to show possibility of undertaking of substantial actions in pre- and post – syuicidal situations by clergy and laity in parish community. This goal has been accomplished.

Skala zjawiska samobójstw prowadzi do stale zadawanych pytań o skuteczność kroków profilaktycznych, które mają ratować zagrożone życie ludzkie. Religia, a dokładniej zaangażowanie religijne chroni ludzi przed popełnieniem samobójstwa.

W okresie przedrozbiorowym dość częste były przypadki migracji kandydatów do kapłaństwa poza granice rodzimej diecezji. Specyficzną grupę z nich stanowili duchowni pochodzący z terenów dawnej diecezji warmińskiej. Pracowali oni w wielu diecezjach Rzeczypospolitej i wstępowali do zakonów. Część z nich podejmowała pracę duszpasterską i formacyjną w seminariach na terenie dawnej archidiecezji gnieźnieńskiej. Warmiacy byli tam chętnie widziani, gdyż znali język niemiecki, pomocny zwłaszcza w pracy duszpasterskiej wśród mniejszości niemieckojęzycznej napływającej licznie zza zachodniej granicy Rzeczypospolitej. Informacje o nich zawierają akta seminaryjne, wizytacyjne i księgi czynności biskupich.

Cases of migration of candidates for the priesthood from their native dioceses were quite frequent in the pre-partition period. Priests from the former diocese of Warmia constituted a specific group among them. They worked in many dioceses of the Re-public of Poland and entered monastic life. Some of them engaged in pastoral and formation work in seminaries in the former Archdiocese of Gniezno. Priests from Warmia were willingly received there because of their knowledge of German, which was helpful in pastoral work among the German speaking minority arriving in great numbers from behind the western border. Information about the priests can be found in seminary records, visitation records as well as in bishops’ books of duties.

This article examines the use of the title papa in the Greek and Coptic papyri, ostraca, and inscriptions of the third–ninth centuries, refuting previous claims that it was primarily used as a ‘priestly title’. The main grammatical features of the term are sketched out, before delineating the use of papa as both noun and honorific to mean ‘bishop’ over the third–seventh centuries, and then as an honorific for monastic administrators after the sixth century. Some brief observations are then made on how the title appears to develop over the ninth–thirteenth centuries.

After the Second World War, the region of Western Pomerania changed its religious face from Protestant to Catholic as a result of political decisions. As the Polish territory was moved to the west, the influence of the Roman Catholic Church also shifted. Not only secular settlers but also priests had to adjust to those exceptional circumstances. Usually treated as part of the institution they created, they have not yet been fully described as one of the groups of migrants. However, their role was crucial for the settlement and land development by believers, the Church and the Polish state. The aim of the article is to answer the questions who those clergymen were and how they dealt with this unusual challenge. In the literature on the subject, such issues as settlement processes in the Western and Northern Territories, the creation of the church administration, and relations between the state and the church have been widely described. Relations between priests and believers or relations among clergymen themselves are still less known. The documents available in the archives of state and church provenance allow to examine the priestly environment, which also underwent the stage of adaptation and integration with the foreign material and social environment. The historical and comparative method of research led to the establishment of several conclusions, including the most important one that the priests who came to Western Pomerania in the first decade after the war were not homogeneous. Their diversity concerned origin, education, customs or age, but also their attitude towards the so-called Regained Territories, their duties, church discipline or the new authority in Poland. This disintegration, often accompanied by prejudices and stereotypes, constituted the specificity of the religious life of the region and from this point of view is worth examining.

The paper focuses on the invalidation of unappeasable judgments delivered against priests in Poland before 1989. The Catholic Church was repressed during the communist period and the priests were persecuted. The communist campaign against religion attempted to abolish religion in Poland. The Catholic Church provided resistance against the totalitarian regime after World War II. The point of the paper’s deliberations is an analysis of the Act of 23 February 1991 on the annulment of convictions of persons persecuted for activities aimed at achieving independence for Poland. Regulations of the Act of 1991 are important elements of transitional justice. Pursuant to article 1 of the Act of 1991 convictions and other decisions rendered by the Polish judicial and prosecuting authorities between 1944 and 1989 could be invalidated. The invalidation concerns the convictions which were sentenced because of politically-motivated activity for the independence of Poland. The situation that the priests were persecuted not only because of religion but also because of political activities for the sovereign existence of Poland, allows annulment of verdicts issued against them by Polish organs. After the invalidation of conviction, the convicted individuals could bring compensation claims according to article 8 of the Act of 1991.

Obok dobrze rozwiniętych struktur parafialnych i prężnie działającego duszpasterstwa w jej przestrzeń wpisuje działalność ponadparafialną w postaci m.in.: kapituły kolegiackiej, sanktuarium pańskiego, Domu Księży Emerytów, festiwalu organowo-kameralnego, jak też wizyt znamienitych gości m.in. prymasa Polski kard. Stefana Wyszyńskiego, i uroczystości o charakterze diecezjalnym – Millennium Chrztu Polski.

The post-war history of the parish in Kamien Pomorski is as interesting as the whole church history of these lands. Parish Kamieńska was before the war in 1925. (currently there are two parishes, although the second church St. Padre Pio da Pietrelciny only nominally). Certainly being here for almost 350 years episcopal (1188-1545) had a very noticeable impact on the contemporary face of that parish. Next to the well-developed structures and vibrant parish pastoral ministry there are other additional activities : collegiate chapter, the sanctuary of the Lord, the House of Retired Priests, chamber organ festival, as well as visits of distinguished guests including Polish Primate Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, and ceremonies of a diocesan - Millennium of the Baptism of Poland.

The inhabitants of Szadek and its neighbourhood, gathering in the parish church to participate in the liturgy and listen to the Church teaching, shaped their religious and moral attitudes. The source materials providing the basis for establishing the religious and moral state of the parish of Szadek in the second half of the 1811‘ century include primarily the preserved records of five canonical inspections carried out in 1759-1760, 1762, 1779, 1788 and 1798. The Worship of God Was mainly performed during services and masses in three churches: the parish church under the invocation of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin and St. James the Apostle, renovated in 1788, With rich interior decorations (13 altars, many paintings and sculptures), St. Giles’ Church, also renovated in 1788 and used only occasionally, and the Holy Trinity Church at the local hospital. The religious and moral condition of the parishioners depended largely on the parish clergy - their personal attitude and pastoral care. In the first half of the 1811‘ century, the person responsible for pastoral Work Was the local parish-priest, supported by the missionary college priests (performing also other functions in the parish) and the hospital provost. The parishioners themselves took active part in the religious and moral formation of their community through activities of church brotherhoods, guilds and a parish school, as Well as in the care for the sick, elderly, poor and homeless (the hospital, fulfilling also the function of a poor-house).

This article discusses the history of P. Berol. inv. 6848, known for the Demotic temple inventory published as P. Zauzich 12, and provides the first edition of the Greek account on the back, which belongs to the archive of the Soknopaiou Nesos priest Pakysis (TM Arch 165). An appendix lays out the story of its reappearance in the early 1990s as part of a group of thirteen Berlin papyri in private hands and the negotiations and maneuvers that eventually led to the acquisition of this group by the National Museum in Warsaw in 1998.

The article refers to the problem of sexual crimes of Roman Catholic priests. It includes an attempt of estimation of the range of the problem, based on available statistics and literature, as well as examples of reaction to the problem from the Church itself and from the state. The author analyzes potential criminogenic factors of sexual crimes in the Church, such as: the co-called “clerical culture”, the priesthood itself as a risk factor, celibacy of the clergy and homosexual orientation of the perpetrators. The article also describes the criminal law aspects of the problem, especially the punishable omission of denunciation, which is particularly important in the light of accusations of “covering up” sexual crimes by the Church or helping the perpetrators to avoid responsibility.
