Speech prosody is an important factor stimulating the development of the child’s speech. The ability to perceive and interpret prosodic phenomena is the first stage in the acquisition of phonological competence by the child. It first of all enables segmentation by the child of the speech sequence, owing to which it is possible to distinguish linguistic units in it. The degree of prosodic competence acquisition in the early stages of speech ontogeny influences the pace of speech development, while in school-age children it is associated with the level of fluent reading with comprehension. The present paper discusses the problems related to the acquisition of prosodic competence and skills in speech ontogeny. It presents biological and social determinants of prosody development and describes in greater detail the environmental factors that develop the child’s prosodic competence and skills. It also discusses the stages of prosodic development, taking into account the dominant functions of speech prosody in them.

The article deals with the prosodic competence of learners of German, and more precisely with prosodic units. It is not always easy for learners to correctly determine these units and consequently to set correct sentence accents. Lack of correspondence between prosodic and syntactic units leads sometimes to prosodic errors. The article tries to analyze these discrepancies between prosodic units and syntactic phrases in order to determine certain regularities.

The article deals with the recurrent incorrect accent position in the German words articulated by Polish learners, whether when reading aloud or speaking. This seems all the more serious because incorrect word accent (as well as incorrect sentence accentuation) can contribute to communication problems or even misunderstandings. The main problem here is the frequency of the errors, which are always corrected, but without success. The article is meant as a postulate to work out efficient automation methods.

The purpose of the text is to evaluate the prosodic competence of Polish Radio journalists. The object of the acoustic analysis are the recordings of a morning broadcast called “Signals of the day”, made in February 2019. For the purpose of the study, I assume that prosody is a research field within linguistics, through which we understand all sound phenomena of a language that belongs to words, among which we distinguish three most important elements (accent, intonation, and pause) occurring singly or in combinations. When describing the sound layer of a language, I use the proprietary classification of prosodic components only taking into account the variant of their implementation. In the recorded material, I am looking for examples of impressive and effective use of prosodic tools of speech: on the one hand, supporting the process of understanding the message, while on the other hand, introducing new meanings to speech, added to the basic meaning resulting from the meaning of individual words.

W artykule przedstawiono problematykę związaną z nabywaniem kompetencji i sprawności prozodycznej w ontogenezie mowy. Wymieniono biologiczne i społeczne uwarunkowania rozwoju prozodii, a dokładniej scharakteryzowano czynniki środowiskowe, kształtujące kompetencję i sprawność prozodyczną dziecka. Omówiono także etapy rozwoju prozodycznego z uwzględnieniem dominujących w nich funkcji prozodii mowy.
