The article attempts to present the role that peasants played in communist party structures in a provincial voivodeship. The selected issues are intended to illustrate the processes that were taking place when the members of voivodeship communist authorities were being chosen. The main purpose of this text is to outline the mentality of the peasants throughout the dynamic period of the Polish United Workers’ Party’s functioning in the Biała Podlaska Voivodeship. At the same time, the article outlines factors that triggered individuals to join the party ranks and later on renounce party membership.

Artykuł jest próbą uchwycenia roli chłopów w strukturach partyjnych w prowincjonalnym województwie. Wybrana problematyka ma za zadanie zobrazować procesy zachodzące podczas formowania się składu socjalnego wojewódzkich instancji partyjnych. Głównym celem niniejszego tekstu jest zarysowanie mentalności chłopów w dynamicznym okresie funkcjonowania PZPR w województwie bialskopodlaskim, a jednocześnie ukazanie czynników motywujących do wstępowania w partyjne szeregi oraz powodów, dla których składano legitymacje członkowskie w późniejszym okresie.
