The article discusses domestic space, its internal divisions and relations to the external world in Orzeszkowa’s novel Bene nati. In the analysis of the house and its surroundings Susan Gal’s concept of constant private/public recalibrations of space is employed. The interpretation of the text is complemented with references to the writer’s ideas on feminine mobility and home expressed in her journalism on the woman question and earlier fictional work – Nad Niemnem (On the Niemen). In Orzeszkowa’s understanding, the border is a multifaceted phenomenon that may represent privacy and safety as well as limitation and entrapment, and needs to be carefully explored in terms of social and gender hierarchies.

The article offers an analysis of Svetlana Alexievich’s Last Witnesses: An Oral History of the Children of World War II as a history of war from a child’s perspective. Giving the voice to those whose childhood fell on wartime and occupation is a step towards discovering children’s wartime experience as well as a gesture against its ideologisation and politicisation. The protagonists’ memories assembled in the reportage allow us to recreate the children’s point of view about the aforementioned events, which usually remains omitted from the official historical discourse shaped in the USSR.

Artykuł stanowi propozycję analizy reportażu Swietłany Aleksijewicz Ostatni świadkowie. Utwory solowe na głos dziecięcy jako zapisu historii II wojny światowej z perspektywy dziecka. Udzielenie głosu osobom, których dzieciństwo przypadło na czas wojny i okupacji, jest krokiem do odkrywania wojennych doświadczeń dzieci oraz gestem przeciwko ideologizacji i upolitycznieniu ich przeżyć. Wspomnienia bohaterów reportażu pozwalają odtworzyć dziecięcy punkt widzenia opisywanych wydarzeń, zwykle pomijany w oficjalnym dyskursie historycznym kształtowanym w ZSRR.
