The Polish police have come a long way in transforming from highly politicised state policing that functioned under socialism (1949-1989), to that of a service to the public. The aim of this paper is to examine the views on Polish police and contextualise them within a broader, sociological framework by way of presenting selected findings from my doctoral research. My participants’ opinions on the police formed a chronologically-constructed picture, which shed light on the pre- and post-1989 policing in Poland and corroborated Ian Loader’s argument that there is a reciprocal relationship between lay people and the police/quality of policing, and that views on the police remain an avenue by which lay people of a given society share stories about themselves. In this article I argue that lay views on the Polish Police are embedded in a wider perception of the ‘world that they have lost’, post-socialism nostalgia, remembering of the post-1989 transformation processes and constant comparison with the perception of Western standards in police work. The views also serve as an avenue to look into the notion of the Polish legal culture.

Due to its geopolitical situation, Korea started its relationship with the EU quite later than with the US, China, Japan and Russia. However, the EU-Korea relationship has grown “slowly but steadily”. The studies on the perception of the EU have been conducted since the 2000s. Korean scholars have been interested in finding out the Korean perception of the EU and have participated in the multiannual international research projects from the beginning. Their extensive data on Korean media coverage on the EU and public opinion surveys present the nature and characteristics of the EU imagery in Korea. EU-Korea relationship has seen a turning point by the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two parties. The EU became more exposed to the Korean media on this occasion, and accordingly, the Korean public now considers the EU as a more important partner than before. Through the detailed explanation and analysis of the existing perception studies in this paper, one can understand how the EU perception has been shaped and changed in Korea over time. One of the major findings is that the visibility of the EU has been enhanced in Korea for sure, but the images have been still seriously prejudiced as an ‘economic powerhouse’. Further studies are necessary to examine how to widen the scope of mutual understanding in different fields.

Climate change became one of the most-discussed topics of global political leadership, as well as the crucial topic for the general public. The largest public gathering in New York City, since Occupy Wall street movement, occurred in September 2014 and was aimed at demonstrating the public support for climate change agenda. The public perception of this rather broad topic was encountered with a challenge to communicate both individual and organizational problems or mottos, which were carried around on banners, posters, T-shirts or even painted directly on people’s bodies. The aim of this article is to analyze these messages, categorize them and based on these outcomes to predict clear managerial implications and detect potential reputational risks – or gains.

At the end, the reader can become familiar with the statistics on reading and the role of crime novels in creating social reality.

Social perception of the Polish Constitution of 1997 and the proposals for its amendment The main purpose of the article was to show the social perception of the Polish Constitution by Poles. The media reports concerning the proposed amendment to the Constitution of 1997 were analyzed. The article includes, inter alia, questions about whether the Polish Constitution is really important for Poles, or is it rather a tool in the hands of politicians, used to evoke social emotions that are to influence the course of political events. The article uses a method of analyzing the literature and the legal acts on the subject and the analysis of the media content concerning Polish people‘s attitude to the proposed amendments to the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. The analysis of the collected materials shows that Poles know little about the Constitution. The change in the attitude of Poles was influenced by the socio-political situation in the country, divided traditional media and the political opposition.
