In the presented polemical article I discuss the paper by Izabela Wagner (Selektywna analiza problemu publikacji humanistów i przedstawicieli nauk społecznych w języku angielskim [Analysis of the problem regarding publishing the scientific articles written in English in humanities and social sciences by scholars originated and educated in non-English speaking countries], „Przegląd Socjologii Jakościowej”, 2012, t. 8, nr 1, s. 166–187). One of the main issues of her polemic was the process of articles’ review in the scientific international journals. On the basis of her single experience with an American journal, Wagner presents a very negative view on this process. However, neither the author of the presented polemic, nor other known to him Polish scientist who have published articles in the international journals in the area of social sciences have encountered problems described by Wagner. In my opinion, such information is very important for the readers of PSJ, since subjective and pejorative presentation of the reviewing process might cause prejudices towards publishing articles in the international journals among the Polish scientists. Additionally, I described in detail the process of assignment of points to the international journals by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education (the knowledge of which might help to avoid important misunderstandings). Moreover, I presented the possible ways of dealing with unethical editor’s behavior described by Wagner and analyzed her advices on publishing strategies and international career.

Cilj ovoga rada bio je ispitati kako su promjene na poljskom tržištu knjiga u zadnjih tridesetak godina utjecale na odabir poljskih prijevoda hrvatskih autora dječje književnosti. U analizi mehanizama kojima su se u tome služili poljski nakladnici iskoristila sam teoriju književnog polja Pierrea Bourdieua u okviru koje francuski filozof nudi alate kojima je moguće kriterije za odabir dječjih knjiga dovesti u vezu s mjestom izdavača u nakladničkom polju, a koje je pak dio šireg književnog polja. U tom sam smislu najprije opisala promjene na poljskom nakladničkom tržištu nakon 1990., te predstavila knjige za djecu hrvatskih autora prevedene i objavljene u Poljskoj između 1990. i 2020. godine, kao i njihovu recepciju. I konačno, pomoću dijagrama suvremenog poljskog književnog polja, unutar njega posebice polja dječje književnosti nastojala sam analizirati motivacije i ciljeve poljskih nakladnika.

The aim of the paper is to investigate how the changes that have taken place in the children’s book market in Poland over the last thirty years have influenced the selection of children’s books by Croatian authors that have been translated and published in Poland as well as their reception. Thanks to the conducted analyses, it will be possible to estimate the size and character of Croatian children’s literature in Poland in the analysed period. My focus will be primarily on the mechanics of book selection - publishers’ motivation, their decisions and the consequences of their choices. I will analyse the mechanisms of selecting texts for translation by Polish publishers and their consequences on the basis of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of literary field.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zbadanie, w jaki sposób zmiany, które na przestrzeni ostatnich trzydziestu lat dokonały się na gruncie rynku książki dla dzieci w Polsce wpłynęły na wybór utworów dla dzieci chorwackich autorów, które poddano procesowi tłumaczenia i udostępniono polskim czytelnikom, a także ich funkcjonowanie i recepcję na gruncie kultury docelowej. Dzięki przeprowadzonym analizom będzie można oszacować rozmiar oraz kształt, jaki w badanym okresie chorwacka literatura dla dzieci przybrała w Polsce. W centrum mojego zainteresowania znajdą się przede wszystkim mechanizmy selekcji utworów – motywacje wydawców, podejmowane przez nich decyzje oraz konsekwencje ich wyborów. Analizy mechanizmów wyboru tekstów do tłumaczenia przez polskich wydawców oraz ich konsekwencji dokonam w oparciu o teorię pola literackiego Pierre’a Bourdieu.

We see them in libraries, and we sense the differences between them and highly-cited literature. We know that many authors’ ambition is to have a paper published in one of them. What is their role in the circulation of scientific findings? The aim of the study is to define, describe and evaluate the possible effects of “inconspicuous journals” (monographs, conference proceedings and other low-rated publications) on the domain of scientific resources and the organization of knowledge. Material and methods are casual but based on everyday observations of a librarian and publisher. The publications in question are perceived as a disaster by critics of the publishing scene and scholarly communication, but they are treated seriously by both publishers and the state quality-assurance system. They are apparently in the queue for the points for citations, and while there is not much hope for them in this field, they also seem to make a scene on their own. They may be useful for scholars who are not mature enough to run for publishing in IF journals, and they provide a good field for local and regional scientific communities to strengthen their potential and communication patterns. To sum up, inconspicuous works have their own share in the world of knowledge. They perhaps should not multiply, but there is no reason to suppress them for not providing “points” for their publishers.

Widzimy je w bibliotekach, a różnica między nimi i czasopismami wysoko cytowanymi jest intuicyjna. Wiemy, że ambicją wielu autorów jest zamieszczenie w którymś z nich publikacji. Ale jaka jest ich rola w obiegu twierdzeń naukowych? Celem pracy jest zdefiniowanie, opisanie i ocena możliwych skutków funkcjonowania „niepozornych czasopism” (a także monografii, zbiorów konferencyjnych i innych publikacji uważanych za drugorzędne) w obszarze zasobów nauki oraz organizacji wiedzy. Materiał i metody to uogólnienie codziennych doświadczeń bibliotekarza i wydawcy. Publikacje, o których mowa, są przez krytyków i analityków życia akademickiego i komunikacji naukowej uważane za katastrofę. A jednak wydawcy i państwowy system zapewnienia jakości w szkolnictwie wyższym traktują je poważnie. Widać, że dopiero pracują na swoje punkty, a rokowania w tym zakresie są raczej niepomyślne. Mają jednak własne nisze. Są na przykład niezbędne uczonym, którzy nie dojrzeli jeszcze do publikowania w czasopismach z IF, i wspierają lokalne oraz regionalne społeczności naukowe, tak by zyskały one świadomość swojego potencjału i praktyk komunikacyjnych. A zatem prace niepozorne mają swój udział w świecie wiedzy. Nie chcielibyśmy, żeby zwiększał się on procentowo, ale nie powinno się ich poddawać swoistym represjom za to, że nie dostarczają punktów wydawcom.
