W dziewiętnastowiecznej literaturze seksualność może być przedstawiona tylko w sposób pośredni – poprzez aluzje i metafory. W „Zdobyczy” Emila Zoli rośliny w szklarni wyrażają i symbolizują pragnienia postaci. Siła pierwotnego obrazu została jednak całkowicie zatracona w polskim przekładzie, powstałym w 1950 roku. Będąc wytworem komunistycznych realiów, tekst ten nie bierze pod uwagę kulturowego aspektu procesu tłumaczenia. Próba wiernego oddania warstwy leksykalnej i syntaktycznej odbywa się w nim kosztem charakterytycznej dla Zoli „malarskości” opisu, co powoduje, że najpiękniejsze fragmenty dzieła pisarza pozostają w zasadzie nieznane polskim czytelnikom.

In the literature of the 19th century, sexuality may be painted only in an indirect way, through allusions or metaphors. In Émile Zola’s "La Curée", plants in a greenhouse express and symbolize the character’s desire. However, the force of the original image is completely lost in the Polish translation, made in the 1950s. Being a product of the Communist period, this text doesn’t take into consideration the cultural aspect of the process of translation. An attempt to imitate the lexical and syntactic structure is made at the cost of pictorial description, characteristic of Zola’s prose. Therefore, the most beautiful fragments of French novel remain nearly unknown to polish readers.

The project of international scientific conference, inspired by the thought of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, encourages to look from the position of different disciplines and research methodologies at broadly understood minority problematics. The following specific issues have been proposed as a subject of reflection: minority identity; dependency, anti-dependency and post-dependency aspects of the relationship between the minority and the majority; borderland phenomenon; center–periphery relations; spatial mobility vs minorities; cultural difference; meeting people of different cultures; multiculturalism vs interculturalism and transculturalism; minority discourse on minorities. At the same time, the issue of minority is placed on the grounds of “long duration”, regarded as an important part of the intellectual heritage of the Enlightenment, applied or rejected in the modern concept of a man (the ideas of freedom, equality, human rights, tolerance) and in the ways the description of the World is constructed (categories essentialism, normativity, universalism).

This article explores three routes into the Far East, starting with the explorative and adventurous escapades of Maurice Benyovszky, moving on to the exploring of Siberia and the Chinese border, both common in the nineteenth century, and ending with mass maritime tourism that developed after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Texts by Polish travelers including Benyovszky, Jerzy Tymkowski, Józef Kowalewski, Agaton Giller, Bronisław Rejchman and Julian Fałat have been selected from a great wealth of source materials to represent categories of material routes into Asia that informed specific conceptual frameworks and shaped the writers’ methods for representing different cultures. These methods were also impacted by the contemporary intellectual experiences of the authors.

Artykuł przedstawia trzy typy drogi na Daleki Wschód od pionierskiej i awanturniczo-przygodowej eskapady Maurycego Beniowskiego, przez najczęstszy w XIX wieku wariant eksploracji Syberii i pogranicza chińskiego, po rozwijającą się dzięki otwarciu Kanału Sueskiego (1869) masową turystykę morską. Teksty polskich podróżników, Beniowskiego, Jerzego Tymkowskiego, Józefa Kowalewskiego, Agatona Gillera, Bronisława Rejchmana i Juliana Fałata zostały wyselekcjonowane ze znacznie obfitszego materiału źródłowego podług kategorii wariantu materialnej drogi do Azji, która warunkowała pewne ramy konceptualne konstruujące sposób reprezentacji odmiennych kultur, aktualizowany przez współczesne autorom doświadczenia intelektualne.
