This study deals with the personality of the writer Teréza Nováková (1853-1912). The author and her work is a classic example of the domain and genre penetration at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. the attention of society turns distinctively to folk culture and ethnology now shapes up as a scientific branch. Realism dominates the literature and rural themes are very actual. Many personalities are able to interconnect science and art and to engage themselves in both directions. T. Nováková is one of them and, moreover, she brings in the publicistic and journalistic genres, as well as the aspects of struggle for women’s emancipation.

Jacek Dehnel shows in Balzakiana his interest in tradition of realistic prose with a distinctive method of narration and an area of interests. The article shows the constant tension between the methods of depicting the world based on knowledge and an imitation of perceptual processes. This idea is charac- teristic of the newest prose composition. The article examines the multiple connections of the narration of Balzakiana to plastic arts and the language of the film. Jacek Dehnel’s Balzakiana reminds people about problems which haven’t changed despite the passage of years. Those problems are expressed by means referring to the visuality of any modern artistic media.

Samosiejki by Dominika Słowik is a collection of short stories which belongs to the current of recent realist prose that willingly uses the fairy-tale convention. The category of bizarreness plays a key role in this collection, as it is closely related to the world of nature. The protagonists become witnesses to weather anomalies and aberrations in nature, which brings to mind pessimistic visions of an impending ecological disaster. The protagonists are not only observers of the changes taking place in the natural environment, but they also notice the anomalies in themselves. In Samosiejki the blurring of the boundary between what is real and what is fairy-tale also includes the boundary between what is human and what is plant.
