The characteristics of the surnames of Piotrków Trybunalski's inhabitants Keywords: anthroponymy, the region history, dialectology. Słowa kluczowe: antroponimia, historia regionu, dialektologia. The characteristics of Piotrków inhabitants' surnames from the chronological period of the 16th-20th cen-turies was made on the historical-social background of the town, using chrony as an interpretative method. The analysis of the anthroponyms let me identify some typical naming features of the region. The most im-portant of these are: numerous surnames deriving from the names of jobs, distinctive structural onimical forms in particular phases of the development of Piotrków inhabitants' anthroponymy, relatively late mod-elling of suffix -ski and -k-, the influence of phonetics, dialectal lexis and probably dialectal word-formation on shaping Piotrków inhabitants' onyms as well the genetic diversity of the 19th and early 20th-century anthroponymy based on Polish and foreign language morphological systems.

The article deals with an international research project concerning the image of the Prussian lands over the centuries as presented in school course books in four countries – Poland, Germany, Russia and Lithuania. The first part includes the research on the condition of regional historical consciousness Warmia (Ermeland) and Masuria (Eastern Prussia) done by both Polish and German researchers. As a result, it became obvious that school course books designed for regional education, which would educate about the Prussian lands and shape a sense of community of many cultures, should be prepared. Thanks to scientific cooperation between the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the German Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, it was possible to apply together for financial resources to carry out common research projects. The project was joined by: historians from the University of Warmia and Mazury, the Institute of History and International Relations in Olsztyn, and the sta. of Georg-Eckert Institute in Braunschweig. The aim of the project is a systematic and multifaceted comparison of the regional construction of identity in school course books in relation to the area of “Pruzzenland”. The common historical approach to the past of the four nations: Germany, Poland, Russia and Lithuania has not been studied yet. The analysis of course books takes place in five central themes and selected concrete time points: 1) “the Prussians”, 2) “National myths”, 3) “The experience of migration”, 4) “Personages”, 5)” The scenery”. The themes are discussed within the scope of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century: 1) the inter-war period, 2) After WWII (1945–1989), 3) After the collapse of communism 1989/91, 4) The present time (until 2009). A permanent result of the project will be the study of the analysis of course books in the form of a scientific monograph. Secondly, selected teaching materials such as maps, diagrams, illustrations, source texts concerning the Prussian lands and selected subjects will be published. The product will be presented on-line, making it available for use to Germany, Poland, Russia and Lithuania. Finally, an international conference will be organized, where a monographic study in German and Polish will be presented. The internet product will be demonstrated there as well. The so-called ‘soft’ effect of the project, which will be hard to measure, will be the introduction of a supranational, transborder approach to the complicated history of these regions in Europe, where the political situation frequently changed, and people fail to have a stable historical identity. The project will allow inhabitants of the regions, teachers, students, and local authorities to foster communication within the nations and ethnic groups, and to develop an effective transregional cooperation.

The Politicisation of countryside was an integral part of the fundamental transformation of society, which we usually refer to as modernization. The works on modern French history have contributed significantly to the knowledge of the regularity of the politicisation of the rural areas. The presented historiographic balance sheet represents the most significant of them and their authors, such as André Siegfried, Maurice Agulhon or Eugen Weber. It deals with the selection of topics, methods and theses and puts them in the context of the paradigmatic transformations of historiography in the 20th century as well as research on modern French history.

The article is based on a lengthy report by Anton Johann Jüngling on his own activities on 12 August 1780; Jüngling was at the time the Schwarzenbergs’ music director and also a highly placed official. This unique historical source affords a very detailed look at Jüngling’s daily life as a person and a professional, and in combination with other sources, it also enables the creating of a quite detailed picture of the musical events at the Schwarzenberg court over a period of just under two weeks, when the Schwarzenbergs were staying in Český Krumlov with their guests. The musical activities included theatrical performances, a ball, a private concert with repertoire consisting of orchestral arrangements of music from singspiels currently being performed (Die schöne Schusterin and Die abgeredte Zauberey), and accompaniment for worship services. The study documents that the musicians at the princely court were able to secure the music for most of these occasions, and that they were supplemented or substituted for as needed by hired musicians from the town or the military.

The work deals with the Ohlas od Nežárky weekly periodical. The periodical was being published in Jindřichův Hradec in 1871-1942. the aim of my article is to process ethnographically valuable articles published during the 72 years of Ohlas od Nežárky and to evaluate the periodical in quantitative and qualitative terms. In the article, I attempted to outline the concept of the weekly periodical, to delimitate its geographic and thematic scope and thus create a work that would help other researchers with orientation in this rich printed source.

The paper examines some real personalities in the Early Modern-Age Czech history who appear in legends as revenants (Jiří Tunkl of Brníčko and Zábřeh, Zdeněk senior Kavka Říčanský of Říčany, Rudolf Karel Rašín of Rýzmburk). The paper presents, interprets and evaluates selected legends about these protagonists, describes their common stereotypes and the specificities they characterise, and outlines the legends’ genesis.

Marginalization of national minorities in the Second Polish Republic has been primarily discussed in the context of the eastern part of the state and borderland areas. In Biała Podlaska Poviat, located almost in the centre of the country, where the scale of ethnic and nationality-related problems was smaller, one could think that actions aimed at restricting the role played by ethnic and national minorities in the local community, were non-existent. This paper aims at demonstrating that in Biała Podlaska poviat, marginalization of citizens of non-Polish origin also happened, and was, among other, conducted by state and self-government institutions. In order to reconstruct the nation-related structure of the poviat, Anna Madej and Arkadiusz Zawadzki used available statistical sources and employed related research methods. The examination of the statistical sources showed that deficiency of statistical material indicates marginalization of minorities, as the registration formula used by the state institution General Statistical Office, and performed by local administration led to obtaining results inconsistent with the actual situation. It is visible when comparing information earlier than 1818 and the information related to 1940. Additionally, numerous archival sources, both normative and diary ones, testify to realization of consistent policy aimed at Polonization. It seems that regardless of the political party wielding power and the actual state policy trend regarding national minorities, the local state apparatus in Biała Podlaska poviat realized the concept of Polonization of the Ukrainian, Belarussian as well as quite large „local” population. The most drastic example of this was the process of revindication of Orthodox churches by the Catholic Church and using them as churches, public buildings or pulling them down. Efforts were also made to restrict the role Jewish minority in commercial and political life. It required using other methods, since cultural assimilation was impossible in this case. As a result, the number of Jews in the poviat increased much more slowly than in other parts of the country.

The text presents the scholarly and popular science output in the field of regional history produced by Łucja Charewiczowa, a female Lvovian historian of the inter -war period. There is a discussion of the most important works of the Researcher in this field, with special emphasis on their conceptualisation, construction, empirical approach and literary qualities. The outline also constitutes an attempt to present the peculiar nature of Charewiczowa’s writings in the context of the regional history works (the social, historical and economic orientation, a strongly marked presence of female figures, educational and patriotic aspects). Moreover, it also emphasises the research and narrative approaches of the Lvovian author which were ground -breaking in Poland.

Mūsikavamśa (also known as Mūsakavamśa) is a historical mahākāvya written by Atula, who was a court poet of King Śrīkantha, alias Rājadharma, who lived in the 11th century AD. The work antedates even Rājataraṅginī of Kalhaṇa, which is regarded as one of the earliest historical mahākāvyas in Sanskrit. The work deals with the history of the Mūṣika dynasty, which ruled the Kolattunādu kingdom of North Kerala. The earlier parts of the mahākāvya deal with legendary matters, such as the mythical origin of the lineage; but as the work progresses, it deals with many historical data including details of the kings, geographical features, temples and other centres of culture, various religious sects, art, literature and architecture, commerce and shipping. This work, one of the pioneer efforts to represent provincial history in classical garb, using the literary conventions of the mahākāvya genre, as well as a virtual storehouse of knowledge regarding the history of Northern Kerala, is an interesting amalgam of myths and facts. An analysis of the work will yield rich insights into ancient Indian historiography. The present paper is an attempt to investigate the manner in which poet Atula makes use of facts of regional history to fit into the structure of a Sanskrit mahākāvya.

The study offers a regional look into Bohemian history on the example of a microregion in the vicinity of several key sovereign centres in close proximity to Prague (ca 20 km W): Tetín’s fortified settlement, the provostry of St John under the Rock (Skala), Castle Tetín and the town of Beroun. Since it follows the history of the region from the Early Middle Ages until after the beginning of the Hussite revolution, it allows for the understanding of the changing strategies, which the sovereign used in its control. In the same way, it considers a group little investigated – the lower nobility, which played an important role in this region. Here, the author focuses particularly on the question of their seats, properties, relation to the sovereign and to the question of their offices. Finally, there is an attempt to summarize the very meagre data on the situation of the serfs in the 14th century. As such, it is a certain prolegomena to the further research of the region in the Hussite Period.

Historical writing often borders on non-fiction and novelistic fiction. The sparse source base is sometimes supplemented by the imagination of the historian him/herself. The critical scholar confines him/herself to demonstrating that an impressive mixture of legendary themes, folk tales and popular beliefs make up a „mythologised or falsified picture of the past”. The goal is simply to decide who is writing, for whom and for what purpose?

This work describes journalism in Dvůr Králové nad Labem during the First World War in the context of pre-war and war conditions in the Czech lands. A description of the general situation is followed by a breakdown of wartime specifics (wartime propaganda, censorship and economic difficulties). The focal point is the publishing of three Dvůr Králové’s newspapers, which were published during the First World War, and the fates of their editors.

Between June and September 2018, one of the local public libraries in eastern Poland implemented a project documenting roadside crosses and chapels. Information on these small forms of sacral architecture were gathered thanks to the testimonies of witnesses. Next, a book containing photographs of the objects accompanied by brief descriptions based on the recollections of the founders and the representatives of the local community was published. Using the example of this project, this article presents selected problems related to local history using the accounts of witnesses. Both the benefits of these activities (activization of the local community, increasing interest in the past, and increasing social dialogue) as well as the possible dangers (abuses and the expropriation of accounts) were noted.

Many untrue hypotheses and information appeared around the “alleged” witchcraft trial in Doruchow in the second half of the 18th century, which resulted in the death of sever-al women. The text introduces a new category of sources: vital records registers and consistory records, which proved to be valuable material not only confirming the event itself, but also revealing the initiators of the trial, defendants, and witnesses.

The author conducted interviews with regional artists from Sułoszowa (Lesser Poland) and sur-rounding areas, and also examined the archives collected by them, to in this short essay invite readers to read the story of little-known folk groups. The research carried out by her is a re-sponse to the needs of these creators and promoters of culture associated with the Sułoszowa municipality who, aware of the increasing difficulty of finding successors of folk traditions, are waiting for signs of any ingenuity able to save their achievements from oblivion.
