In times of violent conflicts, societies tend to promote narratives that enable successful coping with the situation. Official collective memory can thus provide foundation for a group’s belonging, mobilization, persistence. On the other hand, it often perpetuates the animosity by, for example, delegitimizing (and often dehumanizing) the other side. In this article, we explore whether unofficial personal memories of a violent conflict could mitigate the damage in intergroup relations done by the dominating narratives. We conducted a secondary thematic analysis of 38 interviews with civilians and soldiers in the Post-Yugoslav wars (1991–1995). The themes we report here offer deeply personal and humanizing accounts of the war experience, which have largely remained outside traditional historiography.

Man is a purpose within himself regardless of in which phase of development there is his life. This purpose has been given to him in the act of creation and will be realized by him according to the natural law. This law determines the structure of the human, constitutes him as a person distinguishing it from other beings. Therefore the reason admissibility of after-birth abortion is characterized by error of anthropological in the form of negating the newborn as a human person. This leads to contestation not only the right to life, but also the existence of human rights in general.

Człowiek jest celem samym w sobie niezależnie od tego, w jakiej fazie rozwoju życia się znajduje. Cel ten został mu dany w akcie stworzenia i będzie przez niego realizowany zgodnie z prawem naturalnym. Prawo to wyznacza strukturę człowieka, konstytuuje go jako osobę, odróżniając w ten sposób od innych bytów. Dlatego powód dopuszczalności aborcji po urodzeniu charakteryzuje się błędem antropologicznym w postaci zanegowania noworodka jako osoby ludzkiej. Prowadzi to do zakwestionowania nie tylko prawa do życia, lecz także do istnienia praw człowieka w ogóle.
