The main aim of the article is to provide theoretical insight into the speciﬁc meeting between the researcher and the researched person in studies using thebiographical method. This issueseems tobeall the moreimportant because the use of this method imposes a special character of data collection and interpretation. But above all, it determines the speciﬁc character of relations that take place between the direct participants of this process, i.e. the researcher and the researched person. The author attempts to answer the following questions: What does participation in the study mean for the researcher and what is it for the research participant? What is the speciﬁcity of the biographical approach? What is the essence of the biographical approach in the meeting with another person, the Other? How does the researcher and the researched person act in the changing social space? To answer these questions, the author refers to theoretical reﬂection, contained mainly in the works of Cliﬀord Geertz, within the framework of interpretative anthropology focused on the meanings that people give to their own actions.

Głównym celem artykułu było zaprezentowanie wiedzy teoretycznej na temat specyﬁcznego spotkania, jakim jest udział badacza i badanego w badaniach z wykorzystaniem metody biograﬁcznej. Zagadnienie to wydaje się być o tyle ważkie, albowiem posługiwanie się tą metodą narzuca specyﬁczny charakter zbierania oraz interpretowania danych, ale nade wszystko wyznacza specyﬁczny charakter relacji, jakie zachodzą pomiędzy bezpośrednimi uczestnikami tego procesu, to znaczy badacza i badanego. W tekście starano się odpowiedzieć na pytania dotyczące tego: Czym jest udział w badaniu dla badacza a czym dla badanego? Na czym polega specyﬁczność podejścia biograﬁcznego? Na czym polega istota podejścia biograﬁcznego w spotkaniu z drugim, Innym? Jak funkcjonuje badacz i badany w zmieniającej się przestrzeni społecznej? Poszukując odpowiedzi na tak postawione pytania odwołano się do reﬂeksji teoretycznej – zawartej głównie w pracach Cliﬀorda Geertza – w ramach antropologii interpretacyjnej skupionej na znaczeniach, jakie ludzie sami nadają swoim działaniom.
