Among the multiple factors determining the contemporary legal and social status of the Church and religious associations, historical events and experiences seem to have had a crucial role. They have influenced not only the demographic picture of denominations but also the awareness and identity of contemporary Polish citizens. While being strictly correlated to societal, demographic, political and legal reasons, these factors can be a valuable subject of research for scholars and scientists dealing with different scientific areas. The author’s objective is to isolate and analyse the most important historical events and experiences helpful for describing the status of religion in Poland.

Wśród wielu czynników determinujących współczesną sytuację prawną i społeczną Kościołów i związków wyznaniowych, wydarzenia i doświadczenia historyczne wydają się mieć kluczową rolę. Kształtują one nie tylko demograficzny obraz wyznań, ale sięgają znacznie głębiej, stanowiąc o świadomości i tożsamości współczesnych mieszkańców Polski. Wprawdzie ściśle skorelowane z czynnikami społecznymi, demograficznymi, politycznymi czy prawnymi – po wyodrębnieniu mogą stać się bardzo cennym przedmiotem badań dla przedstawicieli różnych nauk. Autor artykułu stawia sobie za cel wyodrębnienie i poddanie wstępnej analizie najważniejszych wydarzeń i doświadczeń historycznych pomocnych w opisie obrazu religijnego Polski.
