The article analyses English and Scottish travellers’ accounts of interdenominational relations, and specifically religious toleration, as observed in the seventeenth century Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. It traces the changing British perception of these matters over time, from when toleration was a subject of admiration until it began to be seen as a sign of anarchic religious liberty, a weakness; something to be, as Gilbert instigated, ‘abolished and removed from the body and the bounds’ of the English monarchy.

Critical Thinking and Its Relationship with Social Tolerance among Students

The present study aimed to explain the relationship between critical thinking and social tolerance among the students of the faculty of psychology and educational sciences of Zahedan University. The study methodology was descriptive-correlational. 294 students were selected from the faculty of psychology and educational sciences of Zahedan University in BA and MA courses by the stratified sampling method by Morgan Table. For data collection, a researcher-built questionnaire of social tolerance and the critical thinking questionnaire by Ricketts were applied and the reliability of these two questionnaires by Cronbach’s alpha was 0.84 and 0.85, respectively. The results of the correlation test showed that there was a positive and significant relationship between critical thinking and political, ethnic, nationality toleration, toleration against coverage and relationship and total toleration. The stepwise regression analysis showed that critical thinking dimensions explained the variance of social tolerance.

The paper analyses and criticizes Locke’s arguments for religious toleration presented in his Letter concerning Toleration. The author argues that the epistemology Locke developed in his Essay concerning Human Understanding made a more constructive contribution to the case for toleration.

How Radical Was the Enlightenment? What Do We Mean by Radical?

The Radical Enlightenment has been much discussed and its original meaning somewhat distorted. In 1981 my concept of the storm that unleashed a new, transnational intellectual movement possessed a strong contextual and political element that I believed, and still believe, to be critically important. Idealist accounts of enlightened ideas that divorce them from politics leave out the lived quality of the new radicalism born in reaction to monarchical and clerical absolutism. Taking the religious impulse seriously and working to defang it of bellicosity would require years of labor. First all the world’s religions had to be surveyed, see Picart’s seven folio volumes; and Rousseau’s Savoyard vicar had to both preach and live religion simply as true virtue; and finally Jefferson editing the Bible so as to get the irrational parts simply removed, thus making people more fit to grant a complete religious toleration. Throughout the century all these approaches to revealed religion may be legitimately described as radical. Each produced a different recommendation for its replacement. As I have now come to see, the pantheism I identified in 1981 would lead in many directions, among them lay the search to understand all human religiosity and to articulate a universal natural religion.
