This study focuses on the process of selecting and using reporting verbs in student writing and on their denotative and evaluative functions. The aim is to compare student and scholarly writing in order to find any possible interdisciplinary or genre differences. The results of the analysis were compared with Hyland’s (1999) study of reporting verbs in research articles from various disciplines written in English. Key words: academic writing; citations; citation practices; evaluation; reporting verbs
