Nondirectiveness is almost universally recognized as the most defining feature of genetic counseling and adherence to a nondirective approach is the generally required and professed standard; there is no widely accepted definition of nondirectiveness yet. Although the principle of nondirectiveness is still poorly understood, its importance is widely discussed and sometimes questioned. The current article tries to elaborate – by analyzing different descriptions and interpretations of nondirective approach – a theoretically consistent and practically operational concept of nondirectiveness in genetic counseling concerning reproductive choices.

Przedmiotem rozważań są wybrane zagadnienia związane z tematyką rodzicielstwa i bezdzietności oraz wsparcia w wychowaniu dzieci, które dotyczą kobiet z niepełnosprawnościami. Ramę dla rozważań stanowi koncepcja sprawiedliwości reprodukcyjnej proponująca krytyczne spojrzenie na to, jak w społeczeństwach konstruowane jest to, kto może i powinien być rodzicem oraz kto o tym decyduje. Posługując się tą koncepcją, która umiejscawia indywidualny wybór w szerszym kontekście społecznym, wskazuję na czynniki warunkujące doświadczenia tej grupy kobiet (np. dostępność, ograniczenia w prawie małżeńskim, wsparcie).

The aim of this paper is to map experiences of disabled women regarding parenthood and childfreeness/childlessness as well as support in upbringing their own children. The concept of reproductive justice is employed, as it proposes a critical approach to understanding how societies construct who can and should be a parent. Approaching the question of individual choice in a broad social context, I analyse factors that shape experiences of disabled women in Poland (e.g. restrictions on parenting of disabled persons or lack of marriage equality).
