In the era of knowledge society the role vested in higher education institutions consists not only in conveying knowledge and teaching skills but also in preparing students to cope with the dynamism and complexity of the modern world, i.e. equipping them with the socalled ‘added value’. Academic teachers as the people who have day-to-day contact with knowledge and who convey and create it should be first to respond to changes in the surrounding world (forerunners) on order to create conditions for added value to develop (moderators). The standards of professional competence of academic teachers presented in the paper, the new dimension of the teacher’s social role and the relations between teachers and students - all these elements are part of a profile of an academic teacher which is desirable from the perspective of a knowledge society in the making.

W dobie społeczeństwa wiedzy zadaniem szkół wyższych jest nie tylko wyposażenie absolwenta w wiedzę i umiejętności, ale także przygotowanie go do radzenia sobie z dynamiką i złożonością współczesnego świata, czyli wzbogacenia osobowości studenta o tzw. wartość dodaną. Nauczyciele akademiccy - jako ludzie obcujący z wiedzą na co dzień, przekazujący ją i przyczyniający się do jej tworzenia - powinni pierwsi zareagować na zmiany w otaczającym świecie (stać się ich prekursorami), by następnie stwarzać warunki do rozwoju owej wartości dodanej (pełnić rolę moderatorów). Przedstawione w artykule standardy kompetencji zawodowych nauczycieli akademickich, nowy wymiar roli społecznej nauczyciela oraz kwestia relacji między nauczycielami a studentami składają się na profil nauczyciela akademickiego pożądany z punktu widzenia budowania społeczeństwa wiedzy.
