Krytyka romansu tradycyjnego w publicystyce oświeceniowej

The main topic of the article is the attitude of the 18th century publicists to traditional romance. The work points to selected judgments about this literary genre present in the encyclopedic and journalistic texts of the Enlightenment. Some similarities in the perception of the genre, as well as some discrepancies in how the intellectuals of the era comprehended this term were indicated. The reviews presented by the authors are usually of irreverent and critical manner, which results from the fact that the traditional romance was perceived by the literary elite of those times as anachronistic, void of thought or ideology, deprived of artistic values and good taste. Although the leading representatives of the Enlightenment consistently criticized romance, it was remarkably popular throughout the entire century. They were read willingly and therefore often published.

Zasadniczym tematem artykułu jest stosunek osiemnastowiecznych publicystów do romansu tradycyjnego. W pracy zaprezentowano wybrane sądy na temat tego gatunku literackiego, obecne w tekstach encyklopedycznych i publicystycznych oświecenia. Wskazane zostały podobieństwa w spojrzeniu na romans, a także pewne rozbieżności w rozumieniu tego terminu przez intelektualistów epoki. Przedstawiane przez autorów opinie zazwyczaj mają charakter krytyczny i prześmiewczy, co wynika z faktu, iż romans tradycyjny przez ówczesną elitę literacką postrzegany był jako gatunek anachroniczny i bezideowy, pozbawiony walorów artystycznych i dobrego smaku. Chociaż najważniejsi przedstawiciele oświecenia konsekwentnie krytykowali romanse, to przez cały wiek zachowywały one zadziwiającą popularność. Chętnie były czytane i w związku z tym często wydawane.

The article concerns the attitude of the outstanding writer of the Polish Enlightenment, Ignacy Krasicki, to the epic pre-bildungsroman genre, which is romance. The research attention in the article was focused on the opinions about romances expressed in several literary works of the prince bishop. Ignacy Krasicki, like other representatives of the literary elite of that time, treated romance as an anachronistic genre, devoid of artistic value and good taste. That is why the opinions about romances expressed in his works are critical and ironic. On the other hand, the writer was able to use the romance convention in an original way, which is particularly evident in the novel Mikołaja Doświadczyńskiego przypadki [The Adventures of Mr. Nicholas Wisdom]. This entitles us to conclude that the romances not only irritated Krasicki, but in a sense also inspired him.

Tematyka pracy dotyczy stosunku wybitnego pisarza polskiego oświecenia, Ignacego Krasickiego, do epickiego gatunku przedpowieściowego, jakim jest romans. Uwaga badawcza w artykule skoncentrowana została na opiniach wobec romansów wyrażonych w kilku dziełach literackich księcia biskupa. Ignacy Krasicki, podobnie jak inni przedstawiciele ówczesnej elity literackiej, traktował romans jako gatunek anachroniczny, pozbawiony walorów artystycznych i dobrego smaku. Dlatego wyrażone przez niego w twórczości opinie wobec romansów mają charakter krytyczny i ironiczny. Poza tym pisarz potrafił w oryginalny sposób wykorzystać konwencję romansową, co szczególnie uwidacznia się w powieści Mikołaja Doświadczyńskiego przypadki. Upoważnia to do konstatacji, że romanse nie tylko drażniły Krasickiego, lecz w pewnym sensie także inspirowały.
