The author attempts to analyze the Ukrainian literature of the Romantic period using the tools of postcolonial criticism. Describing the problems with identifying the Ukrainian postcolonial condition, she draws attention to the complicated relations between the Russian Empire and Ukraine, which developed in conditions of coexistence of the empire in one continent, on neighboring territories, in the situation of cognate history and mentality, and held not only on the road of aggressive colonizer, but also by collaborating with him the elite of the colonized nation. Among the strategies of Ukrainian intelligentsia resistance in conditions of colonial stands out dualistic attitude, maturing Ukrainian, conscious Ukrainian, messianic and ambivalence.
