This article examines the duology of Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, consisting of the novels Nothing Sacred andLast Refuge. The paper aims to present the function of the literary Shambhala in the context of the space-timemodel of the world presented by the books under study. Based on Mircea Eliade’s comparative religion theory,the author puts forward and attempts to prove the hypothesis of a far-reaching similarity between the function ofScarborough’s Shambhala in the narrative universe and the meaning of a sacred place in the archaic, religiousmodel of reality.

Since 1947, most of Ukrainians in Poland live in diasporas. This situation has a great significant for symbolical organization of space, reconstruction national culture, spiritual life and their identification with the group. The paper is based on the empirical study of Ukrainian communities conducted in two regions, south eastern and north eastern of Poland. The Ukrainians in research work areas have developed a national identity. Their self-definition is based mainly on religious differences: Greek Catholic or Orthodox. Religion has also become an important element of ethnic mobilization of the communities under consideration. In particular the Greek Catholic takes religious and sacred object not only element spiritual life bat also space of patriotic staging and localization national values. This can be seen for example in more elements of local landscape how new shrines have been built, there are new monuments, memorial crosses and other signifying practices. All this practices are coincides with the event the revival of the Greek Catholic Church ( also called in Poland the Uniate Church ), both in the institutional and spiritual sense after 1989.

Tekst stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie o związek pomiędzy duchowością a praktykami symbolicznymi odwołującymi się do narodowego kontekstu. W tym celu analizowane będą działania charakterystyczne dla duchowości grekokatolickiej i ukraińskiej tożsamości narodowej – obserwowane na poziomie światów lokalnych. Dość powszechnie bowiem uznaje się fakt strukturalnego odrodzenia Kościoła Katolickiego Obrządku Biznatyjsko–Ukraińskiego za czynnik stabilizujący sytuację mniejszościową Ukraińców w Polsce. Jak zatem, na terenach autochtonicznych oraz obszarach diaspory, w tradycji wschodniego katolicyzmu zostają aktualnie zapośredniczone wątki nacjonalne. Dotyczy to zwłaszcza takich reprezentacji, jak krajobraz ideologiczny, pamięć i mit etniczny, konstrukcja miejsca martyrologii jako miejsca świętego. W tekście wykorzystuję dane pochodzące z badań etnograficznych, wyniki obserwacji uczestniczącej oraz dokumentację fotograficzną stanowiącą wizualizację opisywanego problemu.
