The article discusses a collection of essays by Grzegorz Jankowicz entitled Blizny [Scars]. Jankowicz’s attainments are what constitutes the main focus for the author of the article – not only those relating to literary criticism, but also the untypical ones that belong to the sphere of “literary activism.” In the text, there is conducted a close analysis of the essayist’s self‍‑presentation considered in a context of the societal games of prestige and significance. Furthermore, a more general situation in the intellectual domain known as literary essayistic writing is outlined. Apart from the foregoing, the author ponders the issue of an emergence of the literary form in question, namely, the collection of texts – once dispersed and written in various circumstances, prompted by variegated impulses, and then consolidated, ordered to achieve a convincing monographic effect.

Artykuł zawiera omówienie zbioru esejów Grzegorza Jankowicza zatytułowanego Blizny. Autor tekstu skoncentrował się na dokonaniach Jankowicza – nie tylko krytycznoliterackich, także tych nietypowych, mieszczących się w polu „literackiego aktywizmu”. W artykule zostały omówione strategie autoprezentacji eseisty w kontekście gier społecznych o prestiż i znaczenie. Ponadto zarysowano ogólną sytuację w domenie zwanej eseistyką literaturoznawczą. Osobno autor zastanawia się nad sposobem wyłaniania się formy wydawniczej, czyli zbioru tekstów – zrazu rozproszonych, pisanych w różnych okolicznościach i pod wpływem rozmaitych impulsów, a następnie scalonych, ułożonych tak, aby uzyskać przekonujący efekt monografii.

The aim of this article is to outline the cultural perception of scars based on the analysis of survey results and narrations collected during in-depth interviews. Katarzyna Bem-Kukulska presents an elaborate division of scars and discusses the borderline and ambivalence of this phenomenon in relation to the concepts of beauty and ugliness. The key to defining scars turns out to be the origin of their appearance and the assessment of the society.
