Grupy samopomocowe tworzą osoby doświadczające podobnych problemów. Samopomoc związana jest z potrzebą współdziałania. Grupy samopomocowe osób chorujących psychicznie są ważnym ogniwem procesu zdrowienia, odpowiadają także na niewystarczające wsparcie instytucjonalne. Mimo tego takie grupy nadal są rzadkością w Polsce. W artykule zaprezentowano definicję tego rodzaju grup oraz zarys historyczny, który pokazał drogę rozwoju grup samopomocowych. Omówiono również ich sposoby działania, funkcje, jakie pełnią, i ich znaczenie dla osób chorujących psychicznie.

Self-help groups are created by and connect people experiencing similar problems. Selfhelp is associated with the need for cooperation. Self-help groups for people with mental illness are important part of healing process and also they fulfill lacks in insufficient institutional support. Despite this, such groups are still rare in Poland. This article will attempt to outline a definition of self-help groups, also it will describe historical outline that will show the way of self-help groups evolvment. In addition this article will discusse the description of their activities, the functions characteristics and self-help groups role for people suffering from mental illness.
