This article examines the issue of siblinghood in older age. The author starts by referring to sociological studies criticising the a-theoricity of empirical research in this field. She proceeds to analyse the most influential theoretical approaches used to study relationships between parents and their adult children (i.e. the theory of intergenerational solidarity and the theory/ concept of intergenerational ambivalence) and to critically assess their potential to serve as a guideline for empirical research on siblinghood and provide a framework for interpreting research findings on intragenerational/sibling relationships. The article devotes more space to the concept of ambivalence, which, the author argues, is a more appropriate approach for exploring relationships between older siblings. It also presents a basic overview of the state of empirical knowledge on adult siblinghood.

The aim of the research was to determine what problems may occur in the life of adult siblings of people with disabilities What was the course of their adaptation and what was, and still are, the main impediments in their present life? The research problem was included in the questions: What is the social situation of adults with siblings with disabilities? What problems do the respondents face in their lives? What was the course of the adaptation process in a family with a child with disability? In order to make an effort to answer the above questions, a biographical case study was used while the way to collect the material was a narrative interview. The profiles of the non-disabled sisters of individuals with disabilities are diverse. They fit in with the views of both positive and negative impact of disability on the life of the entire family. The women interviewed pointed out the knowledge of disability and adaptation in the family, relationships between the siblings, the perception of the parents as well as the difficult aspect of anticipating their own future. The biographical interviews gave a picture of the social situation of non-disabled siblings of people with disabilities, with particular emphasis on the problems they face in their lives and the process of adaptation in the family.

Celem przeprowadzonych badań było ustalenie, jakie problemy życiowe dotyczą dorosłego rodzeństwa osób z niepełnosprawnością, jak przebiegał u nich proces adaptacji i co stanowiło i stanowi najpoważniejsze utrudnienia w aktualnym życiu badanych. W związku z tym problem badawczy został zawarty w pytaniach: jaka jest sytuacja społeczna dorosłego rodzeństwa osób z niepełnosprawnością? Jakie problemy życiowe napotykają badani? Jak przebiegał u nich proces adaptacji w rodzinie w sytuacji niepełnosprawności jednego z jej członków? Aby dokonać próby odpowiedzi na te pytania zastosowano biograficzne studium przypadku, natomiast sposobem zbierania materiału był wywiad narracyjny. Przedstawione sylwetki pełnosprawnych sióstr osób z niepełnosprawnością są różnorodne. Wpisują się w poglądy zarówno pozytywnego, jak i negatywnego wpływu niepełnosprawności na życie całej rodziny. Badane siostry zwróciły uwagę na wiedzę o niepełnosprawności i adaptację w rodzinie, relacje pomiędzy rodzeństwem, postrzeganie rodziców oraz trudny aspekt antycypowania własnej przyszłości. W wyniku przeprowadzonych wywiadów biograficznych powstał obraz sytuacji społecznej pełnosprawnego rodzeństwa osób z niepełnosprawnością, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich problemów życiowych i procesu adaptacji w rodzinie.
