The article is an attempt to answer the question how single women bringing up children consider their free time. The research and the analysis of the results have been based on the methodology of grounded theory referred to the nature and assumptions of symbolic interactionism theory and they are a part of the project (Non)independent motherhood. Between reliance on social assistance and becoming independent. The research was conducted in the group of 17 mothers. It involved partially structured qualitative interview. The results prove the significant diversification of perceiving free time by mothers. Based on the conducted interviews, the following categories were identified: intentional free time, “unconscious” free time – time “passing by”, free time is the time of my children, “non-existing” free time.

In Poland, tens of thousands of couples divorce every year, most of them are parents. Divorce has certain consequences for children, but the situation of children after divorce varies greatly. Legislation in force in Poland safeguards the child's best interests in a divorce situation. The article describes three variants of childcare after divorce: joint custody, single parenthood, reconstituted family. In each of these variants, there may be (but do not have to) certain treats, and everyone can also be a chance for a child to create a stable, friendly educational environment. Certainly, for a single/independent parent, reconciliation of childcare and upbringing with professional activity, housekeeping is a big challenge. It can also be difficult to spend time with a child constantly, lack of time to rest. Joint custody requires constant parents' contacts and arrangements after divorce, which may not be easy for them. In turn, in a reconstructed (patchwork) family there is a greater risk of conflicts, jealousy, alliances directed against one of the family members. However, examples of specific families show that it is possible to create a stable, safe environment for raising children after divorce, although it is certainly a big challenge requiring the maturity of both divorcing parents. From the point of view of child development, it seems more important what emotional climate will occur in the environment in which the child will live after divorce, how his/her parents will deal with the situation of separation and what strategies they will apply than what variant of childcare they will choose.

Artykuł stanowi opis doświadczeń samotnych rodziców związanych z aplikowaniem o pomoc społeczną, a w szczególności z przeprowadzaniem środowiskowego wywiadu rodzinnego. W ramach wprowadzenia teoretycznego zaprezentowano przegląd literatury polskiej, w której podjęto problematykę rodzin niepełnych. Na podstawie analizy jakościowej treści wywiadów przeprowadzanoych z 12 samotnymi matkami opisano ambiwalentne doświadczenia kobiet podczas opisywanego etapu przyznawania świadczeń z pomocy społecznej. Wskazano, iż pracownicy spocjalni wykazują zarówno zachowania negatywne, w pewnym stopniu zakrawające na łamanie przyrodzonego i niezbywalnego prawa do godności, jakie przysługuje każdemu człowiekowi, jak i potrafią, działając empatycznie, realnie wspomóc samotnych rodziców.

The paper constitutes a description of the experiences of single parents in relation to applying for welfare, and, particularly, with the conducting of community interviews. As part of the theoretical introduction the ideas expressed in Polish reference sources pertaining to the problems of single parents are discussed. On the basis of a qualitative analysis of the content of interviews with 12 single mothers the author describes the women’s ambivalent experiences during the stage of applying for welfare. It has been noted that social workers present negative behaviours that might be considered as breaching the natural and indefeasible right to dignity that every human being has, but the workers can also be empathetic and provide genuine help for single parents.

The aim of the study was the qualitative analysis of mother's of child with ASD experience with received and expected support. A structured interview was used in the study. The obtained results give a picture of a woman, alone and overwhelmed with duties, feeling lacking sufficient parental competences. This calls for the development of differentiated forms of support for parents of children with ASD, e. g. support groups, individual consultations with specialists, workshops to develop parental competences. It is also important to provide information support to wider family and to create social campaigns that bring this issue closer to society.
