Ramsey Campbell, whose illustrious writing career began as a result of being introduced to the eldritch works of H.P. Lovecraft, is frequently referred to as one of the most prolific authors in the field of British horror. However, the motifs, literary structures, and character archetypes found in his writings often stem from other genres. With this background in mind, this article undertakes a critical analysis of The Count of Eleven, one of Campbell’s best-known works, through a dual spectrum of picaresque traditions and quixotic mentalities. The initial aim of this process is to assess the depth and breadth of the conceptual interconnections that exist between Campbell’s novel and Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote – one of the cornerstones of pícaro-focused storytelling. This will allow for an estimation of the effectiveness with which the British writer employs picaresque ideas to achieve narrative goals usually associated with works of horror and social commentaries. It will also provide insight into the current pop and sociocultural relevance of the literary concepts discussed and about the validity of the pícaro archetype in the contemporary Western mediascape.

The article initially deals with the early phase of Czech reception of Thomas Bernhard's dramatic work by theatre critics and practitioners, emphasising the existential topics in the productions staged in Divadlo Na zábradlí [Theatre on the Balustrade]. Subsequently, the article focuses on the contemporary interpretation of Bernhard's dramas: grotesquely comical stylisation in the National Theatre and the semi-professional company Depresivní děti touží po penězích [Depressed Children Long for Money]. The third part of the article concentrates on the socially critical themes in Bernhard's satirical texts. The author carefully analyses a less known play Over All the Mountain Tops and its central character of an artist from the viewpoint of xenophobia, conservatism, and neo-Nazism. The topic of artist's corruption by media and political power is highlighted. Bernhard's satirical works become topical as similar tendencies are present in the contemporary society. The article examines how in Over All the Mountain Tops Bernhard critically interconnects prejudice and sexist clichés with antisemitic ideas in order to express the degraded and dangerous mindset of the current cultural elite.

Studie se nejprve zabývá počáteční fází přijetí dramatického díla Thomase Bernharda českým divadlem a kritikou a akcentací existenciálních témat v inscenacích Divadla Na zábradlí. Následně se věnuje současné interpretaci Bernhardovy dramatiky, groteskně komické stylizaci v podání Národního divadla a poloprofesionálního souboru Depresivní děti touží po penězích. Třetí část studie se koncentruje na společensko-kritickou tematiku Bernhardových satirických textů. Autorka podrobně analyzuje méně známou hru Nad vrcholky strání a výš s ústřední postavou umělce, a to z hlediska kritiky xenofobie, konzervativismu a neonacismu. Vyzdvihuje téma korupce umělce médii a politickou mocí. Bernhardova satirická tvorba získává na aktuálnosti tím, že podobné tendence jsou mimořádně silně přítomné v dnešní společnosti. Studie zkoumá, jak autor v textu Nad vrcholky strání a výš kriticky propojuje nejrůznější předsudky a sexistická klišé s antisemitskými názory, to vše jako výraz pokleslé a nebezpečné mentality soudobé kulturní elity.
