This article examines the processes of transformation of European societies in XXI century, taking into consideration especially factors of post-modernity, globalisation and strong social changes. Post-modernity affects all societies, but particularly those new societies in transition. Authors take the broad concept of ‘post-modernity’ as being important for all societies that have experienced transformation in their political, social, cultural, economic, educational and religious spheres following a political shift from socialist to democratic government. The processes of social transformation affect people living in them strongly, in particular in their identity and relationships.

The aim of the article is to analyze the potential educational consequences of commercial advertising campaigns. The author creates the hermeneutics of the selected visual element of the ”Join the Procession” campaign of the Converse brand present in public space. This is an analysis of the persuasion strength of this campaign in relation to knowledge of youth psychology and sociology. The author proves that there is a third education space important for shaping the attitudes of young people – beyond home and school control, which has all the means and conditions to deny or eliminate the fi rst two actions. The author postulates the restoration and enhancement of the educational function of the school.

This article examines migration trends in contemporary Estonia, focusing on migrant movements, legal regulations applying to migrants and national policies dealing with migration. Estonia is a multi-ethnic country in which both immigration and emigration occur on a considerable scale; consequently, understanding migration patterns and trends is particularly important. Historical factors have influenced Estonian society in a way which has necessitated the implementation of integration programmes and strategies aimed at social consolidation. The article features an analysis of the main changes in migration movements in Estonia since it gained independence and presents contemporary tendencies.

DOI: 10.14746/se.2020.56.10 This text is intended to reveal selected consequences of parenthood in conditions of permanent social change. The authors of the article have analyzed some of the advantages and disadvantages among the parents, who are the norm and the majority of family relationships, as well as in the minority group, who realize their role of being a mother in a space of total isolation. The first part will reveal a parenthood full of tensions in the face of cultural expectations of the multiplicity of choices. The second part of the text is made up of disadvantages of imprisoned parenthood, exposed to particular pressures and destruction of ties, in the destructive arrangements of mothers serving time with their children.

In this article I discuss the need for more systematic integration of approaches dealing with religious beliefs and practices into the discussion about sources and areas of gender social changes that occur in global migration. Firstly, starting from the discussion about negative representations of religiosity in contemporary debates, I consider from theoretical and methodological perspectives why we should move the religious dimension from the margins more to the centre of analysis. Secondly, basing on an exploratory review of empirical research about intersections of religion and gender in the lives of international migrants, I discuss findings that reveal about religion as a potential mediator in the gendered revolution. I answer how they help to understand the complexities and ambivalences of social changes and identify the areas they concern. I argue that the revolutionary potential that arises at the intersection of migration, gender and religion is not limited to changing gender orders in religious organisations. It is religious beliefs themselves that influence migrants’ everyday lives and challenge the existing gendered contract in lay areas, in work relations, civic and political participation.

In recent years, the Omo Valley situated in south-western Ethiopia has been undergoing rural and social reforms. The Ethiopian government and foreign investors have implemented a number of projects that have significantly changed the previous social and ecological balance. The article discusses the issues of building the Gibe III Dam and six sugar factories as well as the seizure of vast areas for new plantations. It also analyses the impact of such decisions on the inhabitants of the region.

Każda zmiana społeczna stawia przed szkołą i nauczycielami nowe wyzwania. Szkoła i nauczyciel to dwa najważniejsze filary szeroko pojętej edukacji. To one stanowią fundament wszelkich zmian, w których należy upatrywać postępu gospodarczego, społecznego i kulturalnego. W przypadku wszelkich zmian, jakie dokonują się w edukacji, decydującą rolę odgrywa nauczyciel. W zmieniającym się świecie od nauczyciela wymaga się przede wszystkim, by potrafił nadążać za zmianami, wskazywał kierunek zmian i co najważniejsze – był tłumaczem i interpretatorem zachodzących zjawisk. Jest to duża odpowiedzialność, wymagająca odpowiedniego przygotowania zarówno kandydatów do zawodu nauczyciela, jak i osób już zatrudnionych. W artykule podjęto próbę ukazania roli i znaczenia nauczyciela w sytuacji zmian społecznych.

Every social change poses new challenges to school and teachers. School and teacher are the two main pillars of the education system as a whole. They are the foundation of any changes, among others, the social and cultural ones, and the economic growth as well. The success of any changes, which take place in the education, is based on a teacher’s key role. Nowadays, the changing world of teaching forces a teacher to keep up with the latest trends, to show the direction of changes, and most important – to be a translator and an interpreter of the occurring phenomena. It is a big responsibility that requires an adequate preparation from both would-be teachers and those who are already employed. The article attempts to show the role and importance of the teacher during the time of social changes.

The paper presents the results of the analysis of about a hundred Polish books for younger children (3–10 year-olds) written in the 21st century. During the research special attention was paid to the depiction of children’s play in the analysed literature. The author compared the character of play in Polish children’s classics (M. Konopnicka, M. Kownacka, Cz. Janczarski) with recent stories and novels (written by G. Kasdepke, R. Jędrzejewska-Wróbel, R. Witek, A. Tyszka and others). Some sociological research is referenced in order to assess whether writers present actual situations of play (diagnostic) or try to influence play by giving advice on how to play and what to play (prescriptive). The main conclusions of the research are: in contemporary literature for young readers, children’s play is not presented as often as it was in the previous century; children characters need adults’ help, advice or company to play, they rarely play outside with their friends without adult supervision. Instead, children’s play now often takes place in cyberspace and kids become addicted to their computers and other electronic devices; children are often bored and expect help in finding interesting and involving forms of play.

The presented review article is devoted to the monograph Взаємодія політики і права у процесі суспільної трансформації в Україні та Республіці Польща [Interaction of Politics and Law in the Process of Social Transformation in Ukraine and the Republic of Poland] by Oksana V. Kukuruz. The author emphasises that politics and law are equally important regulators of social relations, sharing a common goal – the effective development of society. She argues that a socially useful model of interaction between politics and law should be based on: scientific basis, constitutional values, information and communication component, political and legal responsibility. The researcher proves that the proper interaction of politics and law is possible through the maximum convergence of their practical and theoretical levels, based on scientifically justified recommendations.

The article analyzes the changes in attitude of Poles towards sport and recreational activities as well as their participation in these disciplines between the period before system transformations and the present day. Based on examples from literature and own studies, we have observed that Poles have shown a growing interest in sport and recreational activities. Moreover, social diversity of participants in this field has been noted. Sport disciplines and diverse recreational activities perceived as "bourgeois" during the socialist period are becoming more popular among members of the middle and upper classes as potential attractive and clear markers of social status. Interest in sport, skills, knowledge, and sports equipment and outfit in such disciplines as sailing, horse riding, golf, and hunting are thus becoming distinctive social markers. These factors are adopted in the reconstruction of sports practiced by members of different social classes. Symptoms of youth social maladjustment. New tendencies

The contemporary socioeconomic transformations in a fundamental way impinge on the shift of displaying social maladjustment among young people. The forms of social activities of, the adolescents undergo a transformation along with dynamics of the current social progress. Some youth, as a consequence of their behaviour and state of demoralization, become subjects of judicial proceedings and sanctions, such as residential rehabilitation or correctional centers. In order to capture the tendencies of youth’s social maladjustment a behavior research was carried out among 120 pupils sentenced by court to a youth care center. The author has undertaken a research indicating, the evolving modes of the youth’s social functioning and the diagnosed symptoms of their social maladjustment have been captured and researched by the author of this paper.

Advertising is a common part of everyday life. Because of that it is considered as a social and cultural phenomenon. It is also connected with a fact, that consequences of advertising are not only intentional (as in economy) but also unintentional. The last effects may be a cause of social and cultural changes, which can be negative or positive. First of all, the negative aspect of advertising's social and cultural impact is often analyzed by critics, but positive is usually omitted. This article presents both of them in three spheres: promotion of esthetic standards, language changes and modeling social behavior, in order to show that we need to maximize advantages and to reduce disadvantages. The presented analysis has the practical implications for the consumer education. It is very important to include social and cultural impact of advertising in consumer socialization, because well educated consumer is an important element of mechanisms of controls of advertising.

The article informs readers about the construction of a test of narcissism and associated phenomena. The author developed a scale based on a definition from the American Psychiatric Association (DSM IV-TR) and it is intended for use in standardised sociological surveys of non-clinical populations. The author tested it in two surveys: a pilot survey (N=141, snowball sampling) and in a representative survey of the Czech Republic (N=1081, quota sampling). The resulting parameters (17 items, the common factor exhausts 47% of the variance, Cronbach’s alfa = 0,926) indicate that the test is more reliable than other instruments used to date (NPI, NPI-16) and owing to its smaller scope is also easy to use in questionnaire surveys. Intensive questioning confirmed the scale’s validity and produced results that correspond with the findings of psychologists focusing on this issue. The author inductively arrived at an auxiliary typology of narcissism. In the text he distinguishes between voluntary and involuntary narcissists, the characteristics of which are described in literature published to date. The findings presented in the article support the view of cognitive psychologists (e.g. J. Beck) who interpret narcissism as a ‘defective cognitive scheme’. However, given the scope of the phenomenon measured in the Czech Republic (narcissistic features can be observed approximately from the eighth decile), narcissism cannot still be viewed as just a marginal and pathological phenomenon. On the contrary, it is necessary to approach it as a phenomenon that has a strong social aspect and also plays a significant role in how modern society functions. In the Czech population narcissistic features are most often observed among the young generation (aged 18–29), childless, singles and people living in communities with more than 5000 inhabitants. As well as identifying narcissism as a socio-cultural phenomenon the article also demonstrates the relationship between the observed phenomenon and homosexuality.

The traditional perception of China as a collectivist country is slowly ceasing to be true. After the economic changes, the social changes are coming, as a result of which collectivism slowly gives way to individualism. Changes take place in many spheres of life: private—replacing a large, multi-generational family with a nuclear family with one child, a growing number of divorces, protection of the individual’s privacy; professional—the emergence of foreign companies with a different culture of work, competition and “rat race”; moral—verbal persistence to collectivist values that do not match the private patterns of behavior. China’s economic development and the actual promotion of capitalist values, with the persistent verbal attachment to socialist values, have caused an increasing number of Chinese people, especially those from the so-called post-80 generation and younger, to not identify any longer with the values of older generations and put their own interest over the interest of the family, kinship group or nation. The gap between official rhetoric and the declared attachment to collectivism is slowly growing, and the capitalist realities are forcing people to individualistic behavior and competition for access to goods and resources.

Tradycyjne postrzeganie Chin jako kraju kolektywistycznego powoli przestaje być prawdziwe. Po zmianach gospodarczych nadchodzą zmiany społeczne, w wyniku których kolektywizm sukcesywnie ustępuje miejsca indywidualizmowi. Zmiany zachodzą w wielu sferach życia: prywatnie — zastępowanie dużej, wielopokoleniowej rodziny rodziną nuklearną z jednym dzieckiem, wzrost liczby rozwodów, ochrona prywatności jednostki; na gruncie zawodowym — pojawienie się zagranicznych firm o innej kulturze pracy, konkurencja i „wyścig szczurów”; w sferze moralnej — werbalny stosunek do wartości kolektywistycznych, które nie pasują do prywatnych wzorców zachowań. Rozwój gospodarczy Chin i faktyczna promocja wartości kapitalistycznych, z trwałym przywiązaniem werbalnym do wartości socjalistycznych, spowodowały, że coraz więcej Chińczyków, zwłaszcza z pokolenia post-80. i młodszych, nie identyfikuje się dłużej z wartościami starszych pokoleń i stawia własny interes w interesie rodziny, grupy pokrewieństwa lub narodu. Różnica między oficjalną retoryką a deklarowanym przywiązaniem do kolektywizmu powoli rośnie, a realia kapitalistyczne zmuszają ludzi do indywidualistycznych zachowań i rywalizacji o dostęp do dóbr i zasobów.

Wybór tematu jest uwarunkowany globalnym przepływem migracji zarobkowej, w szczególności rosnącym tempem tej migracji w Armenii w ostatnich latach. Rozpowszechniona diaspora ormiańska stała się dodatkowym czynnikiem wpływającym na kształtowaniu transnarodowej sieci migracji zarobkowej. Sieć ta sugeruje nowe podejście do migracji zarobkowej i do badań jej konsekwencji. Głównym celem artykułu jest zbadanie społecznych konsekwencji migracji zarobkowej, w szczególności jej wpływu na zmiany społeczne w kraju pochodzenia. Na podstawie podejścia migracyjnego, podejścia wymiany oraz sieci społecznościowej, w artykule omówiono jak migracja zarobkowa wpływa na zmiany społeczne, w jakich aspektach, jakie ma konkretne przejawy. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone przy użyciu metod analizy źródeł wtórnych oraz analizy dokumentów.

The topic of the article is inspired by the global flow of labour migration, especially the growing pace of this migration in Armenia in recent years. The widespread Armenian diaspora has become an additional factor influencing the formation of a transnational network of labour migration. This network implies a new approach to labour migration and research on its consequences. The main aim of this article is to examine the social consequences of labour migration, in particular its impact on social changes in the country of origin. On the basis of the migration approach, the exchange approach and the social network, the article discusses how labour migration affects social changes, which aspects are affected, and what specific manifestations it has. The study was conducted with the use of secondary source analysis methods and document analysis.

W sytuacji szybkich zmian społecznych, cywilizacyjnych i kulturowych przed edukacją rysują się nowe wyzwania. Wydaje się, że szczególnie istotne zadania nawiązują do idei edukacji prorodzinnej, która z punktu widzenia teorii i praktyki pedagogicznej jest ważnym obszarem pracy wychowawczej szkoły. W opracowaniu przedstawiam opinie osób wkraczających w dorosłość na temat realizowanej w szkole edukacji prorodzinnej oraz staram się określić potrzeby i oczekiwania w tym zakresie. Rozważania osadzam na przekonaniu, iż edukacja prorodzinna w nowym wymiarze winna sprostać zadaniu przygotowania młodzieży do dojrzałego związku z drugim człowiekiem i odpowiedzialnego rodzicielstwa, co stwarza szansę na budowanie satysfakcjonującej przestrzeni życia i osiąganie indywidualnego szczęścia.

In times of rapid social, civilizational and cultural changes, education is facing new challenges. It seems that particularly important tasks refer to the idea of pro-family education which is, from the point of view of pedagogical theory and practice, a significant domain of pedagogical work. The paper presents the opinions of people entering adulthood on pro-family education realised at school and makes an attempt to determine the needs and expectations in that regard. The reflections are based on the conviction that pro-family education in a new dimension should meet the task of preparing youth for a mature relationship with another person and for responsible parenthood which creates a chance to build a satisfying life space and achieve individual happiness.

In the past two years, Ukrainian society has experienced deep transformational processes in all of its spheres: political, socio-economic and spiritual. The youth of today operate in extreme conditions: conducting military operations on the territory of Ukraine, the transition to European values. Moreover, the lack of financial stability in the country means that the crisis has led to a re-evaluation amongst of youth. Students are particularly sensitive in this regard and perfectly reflect the new priorities in the system of values, interests and social norms. They are a group in which these changes are the most vivid, a group corresponding to the new trends in fashion, literature, cinema and music, as well as the first group which tends to exhibit an extreme sensitivity to something new, which in turn is reflected in their value orientations. The study described in this article allows an analysis of the causes and nature of social change. Presented in this text are statistics on students’ interests and their values in different aspects—social, recreational, cultural or personal. The results of the study can be helpful in identifying some of the trends emerging in the life strategies of contemporary student youth in Ukraine.

W ciągu ostatnich dwóch lat społeczeństwo ukraińskie doświadczyło głębokich procesów transformacji we wszystkich jego sferach: politycznych, społeczno-ekonomicznych i duchowych. Dzisiejsza młodzież funkcjonuje w ekstremalnych warunkach: prowadzenia operacji wojskowych na terytorium Ukrainy, przechodzenia do wartości europejskich. Ponadto brak stabilności finansowej w kraju determinuje kryzys procesu przewartościowania wśród młodzieży. Młodzież studencka jest szczególnie wrażliwa w tym zakresie. Studenci doskonale odzwierciedlają nowe priorytety w systemie wartości, interesów i norm społecznych. To w grupie studentów widać te zmiany w sposób najbardziej obrazowy. To oni zawsze odpowiadają na nowe trendy w modzie, literaturze, kinie i muzyce, a także są pierwszą grupą wykazującą ekstremalną wrażliwość na coś nowego, co z kolei przejawia się w orientacjach na wartości. Badanie opisywane w tym artykule pozwala na analizę przyczyn i charakteru zmian społecznych. W tekście są prezentowane dane statystyczne na temat zainteresowań studentów, ich wartości w różnych obszarach – społecznych, rekreacyjnych i kulturalnych czy osobistych. Wyniki badań mogą zidentyfikować pojawiające się pewne trendy w strategiach życiowych współczesnej młodzieży studenckiej na Ukrainie.
