The messages and pictures which were transmitted during the 2011 Arab Spring surprised international observers as they were contrary to the stereotypical images of Arabs/Muslims transported so far by mainstream international media. Based on photographic material taken by both local activists and international news agencies and Tillys thesis of the social movement repertoire and displays, this contribution sheds light on the physical and symbolic role of the body (presentation of power and/or powerlessness) during the non-violent uprisings as well as on the forms of representation and the choice of motifs. The gender aspect is implicit in both principal questions.
