Civil Courage: Its Role in the Contemporary World and Its Place in Social Science

The aim of this paper is to argue a need to re-evaluate the notion and function of civil courage in creating conditions for cohesive, just and pluralistic dimensions of contemporary societies. It will assert that courage can perform a vital social function by providing the basis for civic initiatives that affirm human rights and dignities, enrich the functioning of institutions and quality of civil society and enhance social or cultural change. Since the concept of courage is still commonly discussed using terms derived from the Classical Greece, I will delineate this ancient legacy and its contribution to the persistence of various obstacles and impediments in theorizing about courage. This will be followed by a discussion of the relevance of classical sociology’s input into today’s understanding of this notion, after which I will demonstrate that currently, as a result of border socio-political and technological transformations, this notion is in urgent need of re-evaluation. Finally, I will discuss the functions of civil courage in the contemporary world and its place in social science.

This article discusses the theoretical foundations of developed theories and their impact on the lives of older people. In this context, it is particularly important to bring closer the sociological concepts of upbringing according to Florian Znaniecki, as well as the process of transmitting norms and values. According to Znaniecki’s thesis it is the elderly, through the experience and skills acquired in the course of life, who are able to adequately convey the necessary values and norms. Possessed skills, life competences and cultural resources make that the elderly become a life guide for the younger generation, so to speak, social leaders who are able to influence their pupils. Znaniecki’s concepts and theories contributed to the development of sociology. According to the researcher, upbringing, which takes into account both the roles and the importance of the elderly and their axiological messages, is aimed primarily at the proper shaping of the young individual so that he/she is able to independently perform the social tasks entrusted to him/her in the future.

The article focuses on processes of change brought about by the digital technologies. The social change caused by them is frequently being explained by reference to new paradigms, notably theories of information and network society. In the Author’s view limiting the explanation to these theories or even mainly concentrating on them is a weakness of the newest theories referring to change, transformation, social development etc. The Author attempts to answer the question which of the older theoretical orientations dating from before the emergence of the information and network society do not contribute anything at all or very little to our understanding of change and which ones are from this point of view still applicable and useful.

Artykuł koncentruje się na procesach zmian wywoływanych przez technologie cyfrowe. Zmianę niesioną przez nowe technologie próbuje się wyjaśnić w paradygmacie nowych teorii, głównie społeczeństwa informacyjnego i sieciowego. Poprzestawanie na nowych teoriach, czy choćby tylko koncentrowanie się na nich, autor uważa za pewną słabość najnowszej myśli społecznej, odnoszącej się do zmiany, transformacji, rozwoju itp. Czytelnik znajdzie w artykule próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, które ze starszych orientacji teoretycznych powstałych przed pojawieniem się społeczeństwa informacyjnego nic albo niewiele wnoszą do zrozumienia zmiany, a które są nadal z tego punktu widzenia przydatne i wartościowe poznawczo.

This paper presents an issue of contemporary charity activities as seen in sociological perspectives, including sociology of emotions and sociology of social problems. The main thesis states that prosocial behavior is a complex phenomenon due to the various motives and conditions. The author argues that emotions play an important role in individual and institutional charity. The empirical implication of theoretical assumptions is the analysis of the content of the websites of three charitable organizations with the highest level of trust in Poland: the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, the Polish Caritas and the Polish Red Cross.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zagadnienia współczesnych działań prospołecznych z uwzględnieniem dorobku socjologii emocji oraz perspektywy problemów społecznych. Tezą jest stwierdzenie, że zachowania prospołeczne są zjawiskiem złożonym ze względu na motywy oraz uwarunkowania oraz że istotną rolę w indywidualnej oraz instytucjonalnej dobroczynności odgrywają emocje. Empiryczną implikacją założeń teoretycznych jest analiza zawartości stron internetowych trzech organizacji dobroczynnych o najwyższym poziomie zaufania w Polsce: Fundacji Wielkiej Orkiestry Świątecznej Pomocy, Caritas Polska oraz Polskiego Czerwonego Krzyża.
