Although the problems of esoterism are not often undertaken in the area of sociology, this does not mean that it is insignificant for sociological theory itself. In esoterism, the key sociological issues intersect: modernity, sociological change, disenchantment of the world, secularization or counterculture. The article is an attempt to place the subject matter of esoterism within sociology in the framework of a separate subdiscipline. Its major research fields will also be specified. Due attention will be drawn to mutual relations and common research fields, but also to different research objects of the sociology of esoterism, the sociology of religion and the sociology of spirituality.

Choć problematyka ezoteryczna nie należy do zbyt często podejmowanych na gruncie socjologii, nie znaczy to wcale, że jest ona nieistotna dla samej teorii socjologicznej. W ezoteryzmie przecinają się bowiem kluczowe socjologiczne zagadnienia: nowoczesności, zmiany społecznej, odczarowania świata, sekularyzacji czy kontrkultury. W artykule zostanie przedstawiona próba umieszczenia problematyki ezoteryzmu w socjologii w ramach oddzielnej subdyscypliny oraz określone zostaną najważniejsze pola badawcze tej subdyscypliny socjologicznej. Zwrócona zostanie także uwaga na wzajemne relacje, wspólne pola badawcze, ale i odmienne przedmioty zainteresowania socjologii ezoteryzmu, socjologii religii oraz socjologii duchowości.
