Właściwe rozumienie pojęcia „autyzm” przez społeczeństwo stanowi ważną przesłankę wczesnego wykrywania tego zaburzenia u dzieci, skuteczności dalszej pracy z nimi, jak również warunek pomyślnej adaptacji i funkcjonowania całej rodziny, wychowującej dziecko z autyzmem. Współcześnie, poszczególne kraje znacznie różnią się regulacjami prawnymi i organizacją pomocy specjalistycznej na poziomie państwowym, w zakresie rozumienia i wiedzy obywateli na temat autyzmu oraz ich postaw wobec osób z tym zaburzeniem. Celem artykułu jest analiza rozumienia pojęcia „autyzm” przez młode pokolenie Polaków i Ukraińców. W badaniu wzięło udział 164 studentów z obu krajów. Otrzymane wyniki wskazują na istotną przewagę w zakresie rozumienia i wiedzy na temat autyzmu respondentów z Polski w porównaniu do grupy ukraińskiej. Istotne różnice ze względu na kraj pochodzenia dotyczyły postrzegania osoby z autyzmem, a także przekonań na temat przyczyn pojawienia się zaburzenia i możliwości wyleczenia. Ukazując te rozbieżności, obecne badanie eksponuje kulturowo-społeczny wymiar autyzmu, uwidacznia jego rozumienie i świadomość społeczną, wymagające intensywnej pracy edukacyjnej i popularyzującej wiedzę wśród mieszkańców obu krajów, szczególnie zaś Ukrainy.

A proper understanding of the term ‘autism’ by society is an important condition for early diagnosis, the effectiveness of treatment, as well as for a successful adaptation and functioning of the whole family raising a child with autism. There are substantial differences between countries regarding legal regulations, availability of specialized care, people’s understanding and awareness of autism, and social perceptions and attitudes towards persons suffering from this disorder. The purpose of this study was to explore an understanding of the term ‘autism’ among young Poles and Ukrainians. Participants were 164 students from both countries. The results indicated a significantly higher understanding and knowledge concerning autism in the Polish participants compared to the Ukrainian ones. Also, significant differences due to the country of origin have been identified in the participants’ perception of people with autism, their beliefs regarding the causes of the disorder, and the possibility of recovery. Showing these discrepancies, the present study exposes the cultural and social dimensions of autism, and reveals the current level of social awareness and understanding of autism which require intensive education and knowledge popularization among the inhabitants of both countries, particularly in Ukraine.
