Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale features a pattern of violent rebellion that only just fails to happen. Such moments of near-rebellion, best interpreted through the play’s master trope of the moving statue, constitute an exploration of the causes of political rebellion and how best to avert it. Thanks to the close integration of its romance aesthetics and political realism, The Winter’s Tale can be read as a “Mirror for Kings”.

This article presents some preliminary results of the excavation in the sacred animal necropolis at the Bubasteion in Saqqara. This work examined the rock façade further west of the New Kingdom cemetery that was uncovered previously by the French mission in the eastern part of the site. Several tombs were discovered during this excavation, four of which date to the Old Kingdom. One of these tombs, which belongs to a lector priest, Wahty, is beautifully decorated with reliefs and statues. Another of these tombs was built by the overseer of the builders of the Great House, Khufuemhat. In addition, three New Kingdom tomb-chapels were uncovered, all of which were largely unfinished. In the debris that covered the site, much archaeological data was obtained and many objects were discovered, dating to the period between the Old Kingdom and New Kingdom. These included canopic jars, scribal palettes, pottery jars, headrests, etc. During the Late Period, the site was used as part of the sacred animal necropolis associated with a temple of Bastet built in this area. These tombs were used to bury cats. In addition, many various Late Period artefacts were found on the site, such as limestone and wooden coffins for scarabs, wooden and bronze statues of cats that represent the goddess Bastet, many amulets in the shapes of various gods, but also, for instance, fragments of papyrus. The work on the site still continues and in the near future more data and objects are expected to appear.

The article discusses various representations of the forms of poetic description of sculptures in the lyrics of Aleksandr Kushner. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the poem “Pered luchshey v mire konnoy statuyey…” (2008). The specificity and functions of sculptural ekphrasis are revealed. The cultural and historical paradigm of the poetic image of equestrian statues presented in the work are being reconstructed. It reveals not only explicit allusions to the monuments, but also implicit reminiscences, referring to the philosophy of the Roman Stoics (including Marcus Aurelius). It is concluded that the ekphrasis of sculpture is not only an element of the artistic space, but also the most important structural and semantic unit of the text; it not only ensures the internal integrity of the poem, but also intensifies its philosophical component.

This text is a multi-faceted analysis – economic, symbolic, and ideological – of the destruction of monuments commemorating white historical figures such as Josephine de Beauharnais and Victor Schœlcher in the summer of 2020 in French overseas departments. Violence, racism, the logics of repentance, and revolutionary elements indicate the existence of a significant crisis in the Fifth Republic and, perhaps, announce a new order. The text also contains the hypothesis that acts of vandalism are part of the global tendency to reject the colonial past.
