This paper outlines the background to, and describes the main conclusions of, the government-initiated Kay Review into UK equity markets and long-term decision making published in July 2012. The review, whose conclusions were accepted by the UK government, vividly describes flaws in the relationships between investors and businesses and concludes that short-termism is a key problem. It suggests that the principal causes of the short-term approach to investment are a decline of trust and the misalignment of incentives at the various stages of the equity investment chain. Among its recommendations is that the UK Stewardship Code, which advocates greater engagement by shareholders with the companies in which they invest, should include a more expansive form of stewardship, focussing on strategic as well as corporate governance issues.

The UNESCO San Francisco Rock Paintings polygon within El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve in the Baja California Peninsula derives its moisture from the North American monsoon. There, ranchers have depended on the desert since the 18th century. More recently, the desert has depended on the environmental stewardship of the ranchers who have allayed mining exploitation and archaeological looting. Using a Rapid Assessment Procedure (RAP), climate data, and geographical information, sustainability was assessed and foreseeable risks identified, on behalf of the Reserve. The results showed that the costs of stewardship were in terms of water appropriation and livestock herbivory. The socio-ecological system also faced hydrological risks derived from runoff, high evaporation rates and climate change. Additional risks stemmed from the increasing global demand for minerals, including hydrocarbons, found in the Reserve. These external drivers could substantially alter the attitudes of the ranchers or the land tenure. Land abandonment might become possible as children and women seemed to out-migrate from the polygon. Solutions were identified based on the supply and demand for water and should enhance resilience via watershed management and in-ranch water appropriate technologies.

Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ recent encyclical on care for our common home, invites humanity to cultivate “ecological virtues” in order to become more responsible stewards of our imperilled common home. According to the Pope, the formation of healthy habitus for the stewardship of Earth can be achieved only through the cultivation of appropriate ecological virtues. It may be recalled that there is a growing awareness of the importance of the role of ecological virtues in environmental ethics today. In this paper we shall reflect on seven ecological virtues: praise, gratitude, care, justice, work, sobriety, and humility. They do not receive a separate treatment in Laudato Si’, but are mentioned throughout the encyclical. They are like signposts that indicate the road that we need to travel in caring for our common planetary home.

The paper is a refl ection by a professor of economics on parish management in the United States of North America. It is meant as a contribution to the development of a modern Catholic theory of economics, management and fi nances. The presented considerations are based on the notion of Church stewardship which refers both to the Bible and the social teaching of the Church. It is a theory of economics, finances and management on the level of the parish and the diocese. Essentially, it consists in engaging thousands of volunteers in the life of the Church who are inspired in their activity by the aforementioned idea of Church stewardship. This is the fi rst part of the study. The second part will appear in the next volume of the journal.

Niniejszy artykuł jest refl eksją profesora ekonomii nad sposobem zarządzania parafiami w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki Północnej. Stanowi przyczynek do rozwoju nowoczesnej, katolickiej teorii ekonomii, zarządzania i fi nansów. Podstawę jej prezentacji stanowi zarysowana blisko 60 lat temu przez Konferencję Katolickich Biskupów Stanów Zjednoczonych koncepcja kościelnego włodarzowania (stewardship), która odwołuje się zarówno do Biblii, jak i do społecznego nauczania Kościoła. Jest to pewna teoria ekonomii, fi nansowania i zarządzania na poziomie parafi i i diecezji. Istota jej polega na włączeniu w życie Kościoła tysięcy wolontariuszy zainspirowanych do działania opisaną tu koncepcją kościelnego włodarzowania. Jest to pierwsza część opracowania. Druga ukaże się w kolejnym tomie czasopisma.
