This article is an attempt to provide a historical overview of the lay ministry in the Eucharistic liturgy, with particular emphasis on the function of an acolyte. Ancient ministries in the liturgical community and in the daily life of Christians became degrees of „lower ordination” in later centuries, directed at „higher ordination”. The reform of the Second Vatican Council organized these ranks and ministries in the community of the Church, emphasizing the role of the acolyte and extraordinary minister of Holy Communion. Pope Francis in January 2021 opened a new perspective, introducing the possibility of the ministry of an acolyte at the altar and in the community of the Church for women.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę historycznego ujęcia posługi świeckich w liturgii eucharystycznej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem funkcji akolity. Starożytne posługi we wspólnocie liturgicznej i codziennym życiu chrześcijan stały się w późniejszych wiekach stopniami „niższych święceń”, ukierunkowanych na „święcenia wyższe”. Reforma Soboru Watykańskiego II uporządkowała niniejsze stopnie i posługi we wspólnocie Kościoła, podkreślając rolę akolity i nadzwyczajnego szafarza Komunii świętej. Papież Franciszek w styczniu 2021 roku otworzył nową perspektywę, wprowadzając możliwość posługi akolity przy ołtarzu i we wspólnocie Kościoła dla kobiet.
