The COVID-19 pandemic swept fans out of the stadiums, but matches continued to be played in most major football leagues. We make use of this natural experiment to investigate if home field advantage disappears when the home team is not supported by the fans. Focusing on four top European football leagues, we find such an effect in the Bundesliga only. We propose that this singularity may be related to the special role that the fan associations play in German football.

The aim of the article is an attempt to present football relations between the most important, best and most influential teams in Berlin - Hertha BSC Berlin and 1. FC Union Berlin. The two teams are diametrically different from each other - they come from the western and eastern part of the city, have different history, social background and philosophy and strategy of the club. The history of both clubs provides a background for showing the relations between the Berlin football fans. The analysis - covering the period since the 1970s, i.e. the period of constructing an organised supporter movement - has shown that the mutual relations between the supporters can be treated as a symbolic instance of the complicated relations between the citizens of East and West (both Berlin and the whole Germany). The situation in Berlin's supporter community reflects the history of the city's growing together and the mutual relations between its eastern and western part and its inhabitants. Football has been treated as a kind of medium through which the convictions of large social groups are most freely expressed, reflecting the sympathy and antipathy of the city's inhabitants. A review of the narrative literature of the subject was carried out and the methodology of political sciences was used.

The article presents the image of the speedway rider, identified with the medieval knight and preserved in the language and works of speedway fans. The language material was excerpted from the slogans, songs etc. of the black sport fans and their statements, published in fan song books and online forums. The linguistic resource was enriched with terminology and professional vocabulary. Speedway supporters have been identifying speedway riders with medieval warriors for years, naming them the knights of the black track. The knight’s nickname refers to the speedway riders’ outfit, resembling an armour, to the speedway motorcycle, compared to a steed and other analogies, thus creating a stereotype of the knight speedway rider which functions among the black sport fans. The observations prove that such an image determines the fan environmental lexis that operates with many neosemantics, such as the rider, the Teutonic Knights, the armour etc. connoting tradition and culture of medieval knights.

Zasób lingwistyczny wzbogacono o terminologię i słownictwo zawodowe.
