W początkach XX wieku rosyjskie szkolnictwo cerkiewne przeżywało głęboki kryzys. Potrzeba udoskonalenia systemu oświaty religijnej aktywizowała środowisko prawosławne. Wśród wielu wizji reformatorskich początków ubiegłego stulecia jedną z najciekawszych zaprezentował Iłarion (Troickij) – wykładowca i inspektor Moskiewskiej Akademii Duchownej. Oscylowała ona wokół stworzenia nowego typu uczelni cerkiewnej, zorientowanej na duchowy rozwój swoich wychowanków i kształtowanie osobowości przyszłych mnichów.

At the beginning of the 20th century religious education in Russia has been undergoing a serious crisis triggered by social transformation. The approach to development the educational system motivated the Orthodox community. Between a difference vision of reforms the most interesting had represented Hilarion (Troitsky) – professor and prorector at The Moscow Theological Academy. It has been fluctuating around creations of new type religious academy, concentrated on the spiritual development of their pupils and the personality of future monks.
