In seventeenth-century Habsburg-Ottoman diplomatic relations, grand embassies played a crucial role in preserving the peace between the two empires. In the last decade, they have gained some popularity as a subject of historical research. The grand embassy of Johann Rudolf Schmid zum Schwarzenhorn (1650–51), however, has thus far received only little attention. This paper aims to analyse symbolic communication between Habsburgs and Ottomans during Schmid’s mission by examining its three main events: the border exchange ceremony, the entry into Constantinople, and the audience with the sultan.

The study offers so far neglected view of the entry of Archduchess Eleanor Maria on the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at the beginning of year 1670 and of the wedding ceremony that took place on occasion of her wedding with Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki. Based on the theoretical concept of the symbolic communication the study tries to focus on the distribution of symbols, rituals, mindsets and values in the communication space of the royal entries and wedding ceremonies as occasions for displaying the Emperor´s authority, legitimacy and for better understanding of structures of the Early Modern society. The entry of the Emperess-widow Maria Eleanor Gonzaga accompanied by her daughters into Czenstochowa, Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki´s with his spouse into Warsaw and the wedding ceremonies carried a rich communicative and meaningful context.

This paper, based on an analysis of a wide spectrum of extant sources, analyses the preparations for and the course of the Upper Lusatian stage of the oath-taking journey of Matthias of Austria in 1611. It follows the preparations on the part of the monarch’s court and analyses information about the steps taken before the ruler’s arrival by the Upper Lusatian Estates. It follows closely the stages of the welcoming ceremony and describes the course of the oaths sworn to the Czech king.

The current study attempts to reconstruct the coronation of Joseph I as King of Hungary in Pressburg (Bratislava) on 9th December 1687 on the basis of a context analysis of written and iconographic primary sources. Yet, the author is not merely interested in outlining the political background of the coronation and the description of its progress. Using the methodological concept of symbolic communication he strives to decipher individual symbolic stages and gestures, which the very persons involved in the performance put into action. He does not overlook either the forms of personal representation of Joseph I, his parents – Leopold I and Eleonore Magdalene of Neuburg, the Hungarian Estates and the ways of visualising their social standing.

The article describes the problems of psychosomatic illness in children, which is apparent more often at school, as can be shown by the case of Kasia described in the work. The human psyche plays the dominant role in the onset of the illness, and unresolved conflicts, traumas and negative emotions are especially important. A child suffering from psychosomatic pain suffers no less than a person with somatic pain, and the organ in pain symbolizes the child’s problem. How to read the symbols and how to help a child at school are among the questions raised in the article.

The study strives to complexly understand the tools the mining community used to represent itself within the society of Kutná Hora. The miners were not among the wealthy nor those that were exposed in society, although their corporation was well respected and its representations were visible in various contexts of municipal life. The esteem in which the mining community was held balanced the insignificant position of the miners themselves within the entire community. This also created a demand for power that the miners did not hesitate to use beginning at the end of the 15th century. Thanks to its skilful communication and reasoning of its importance, the mining community was able to force its will and influence political decisions.

This study, based, in particular, on reports, until now unused in research, from foreign envoys to the Imperial Court; the Hapsburgs’family correspondence, the post-mortem report, deals with the course of the illnesses of Rudolph II., his death and funeral ceremonies in Madrid and Prague. In connection with the spread of the reports of the death of the Central European ruler during the year of 1612, the authors have attempted to gain an insight into the contents and means of communication at the Imperial Court in Prague. They have not failed to pay attention to the activities of influential courtiers and their intelligence networks. At the same time they traced the communication routes between Prague, Antwerp, Brussels, Florence, Madrid, Nuremberg and Rome along which the information about the death of Rudolph II and preparations for his funeral spread. The focus of this study lies in the interpretation of the symbolic importance of the social body of the deceased Emperor. From the lying-in-state of the corpse to the requiem mass, he was entering the collective memory as a virtuous ruler, a Christian knight and a defender of the Catholic faith, like his famous ancestors of the Hapsburg dynasty.

The article presents the findings of research carried out in Palestine with the use of the tools of visual anthropology. The analysis demonstrates the potential of the application of the concepts of “the third generation” and “post-memory” to describe the experience of young Palestinian women. The argument focuses upon the strategies resorted to by women who, in the course of the study, agreed to present the key values that they profess, and consented to share them publicly in the form of a photo-interview. Their narratives are presented in the context of the reinterpretation of the events of the Nakba.

This study traces, using the approaches of historic anthropology and symbolic communication, the creation of a discourse image of the Battle of Keresztes (Eger) in October 1596, the largest clash during the fifteen years of conflict between the Hapsburgs and the Ottoman Turks. Attention is further devoted to the changes and the subsequent life of this image in the Rudolphinian period and its overlap into the 19th century.

The author presents an overview of research into the issues related to synods and synod legislation in East Central Europe over the last fifteen years. The paper describes the outputs dealing with legatine synods, provincial synods and diocesan synods. The territory is limited to the lands of the Bohemian Crown, Poland, Hungary, Pomerania, the State of German Knights in Prussia and the Margraviate of Meissen. The article is structured in the following chapters: 1. Introduction; 2. Position of synodical issues within Czech historiography; 3. Book sources editions; 4. Book monographs; 5. Chapters on synods in syntheses; 6. Conference collections on synods and book anthologies of synodical studies; 7. Studies and articles: 7.1.
