The article describes the values of Friedrich Froebel’s pedagogical thought and prac-tice in pre-school education. The biography of the creator of modern preschool education has been outlined, along with his pedagogical ideas which led to the formulation of the principles of the concept. The most important works of the pedagogue, as a valuable illustration of his educational philosophy have been analysed with particular attention paid to play and the quality of teaching materials - Froebel's gifts. Some pedagogical activities inspired by the the-ory of play in contemporary preschool education have also been addressed in the article.

W artykule starano się ukazać stale aktualną wartość koncepcji niemieckiego pedago-ga Friedricha Froebla. Przybliżono biografię twórcy nowoczesnego wychowania przedszkolnego, jego myśl pedagogiczną prowadzącą do sformułowania założeń koncepcji. Poddano analizie najważniejsze dzieła pedagoga będące istotnym opisem jego filozofii edukacyjnej małego dziec-ka. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono zabawie i znaczeniu materiału dydaktycznego – darów Froebla. Opisano także niektóre działania pedagogiczne inspirowane teorią zabawy we współ-czesnej edukacji przedszkolnej.
